Simon Wright - UK Chart Product & Imports UNITED KINGDOM Created Fri 23rd Feb '07 14:34 (GMT) Edited Fri 23rd Feb '07 14:36 (GMT)marvellous MUTE box coming soon We are proud to announce the release of '
Mute Audio Documents ', a Deluxe Limited Edition Box Set on 26th March 2007.
With 128 tracks over 10 CDs, 'Mute Audio Documents ' is a unique insight into the musical development of the label and its artists, highlighting the influence, the success and, most importantly, the great music produced since its inception in 1978. This box set is a collection of Mute’s single releases from 1978 to 1984 and includes the first 4 double CD volumes of an ongoing series plus a 2CD rarities album exclusive to the box set. The series will feature all the A-side and B-side single tracks released by Mute in addition to album tracks by the artists for whom there were only album releases.
Mute emerged in the post-punk era. It was a new era of pop democracy, and anyone could make a record. You didn’t even need to know three chords, according to Mute founder Daniel Miller. All you needed, he said, was an idea. His ‘idea’ was to create a classic of DIY pop – a double A sided 7” single featuring the songs T.V.O.D. and Warm Leatherette. He called himself The Normal, designed a sleeve with Letraset, stuck the name Mute on it, and accidentally started a record label.
You only have to listen to the music gathered on these 10 CDs to see how Mute became the blueprint for maverick independence and sonic adventurousness – a blueprint that countless labels follow to this day. The documentary evidence is here. All you have to do is listen.
The exclusive 2CD rarities album, which features recordings by The Normal and Robert Rental, Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget and Yazoo plus John Peel and David Jensen session tracks from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Yazoo, will only be available as part of the 'Mute Audio Documents ' box set which also includes exclusive sleeve notes by Chris Bohn, Step... Rafael Bilbao SPAIN Created Fri 23rd Feb '07 10:14 (GMT)Great Italian female singers Milva is an artist of the time of my parents. She is considered to be one of the greatest of the Italian song, together with Mina & Iva Zannichi. We had , in my childhood, cassettes of international singers, and among them, we would to have one of Miva, sung in Spanish. Of the singers, if they were Italian, we preferred the songs to be sung in Spanish, and it should be so in the case of Milva, too. I have been trying to find cassettes or vynils of her sung in Spanish, in the Internet, but I have not found any. However, she has South-American discography, and therefore it must be sung in Spanish. There is the cover of one LP, entitled "For love", which I would like to find.[reply to this topic ]

'Téo & Téa' is a shot of fun, hedonist energy laced with suave groove. The album also encompasses Jarre’s talent as a composer and producer – strong, catchy melody lines in a singular, panoramic sound environment. The music weaves from hip dynamic through to sensual and uplifting dance floor beats. Richard M UNITED KINGDOM Created Thu 22nd Feb '07 16:51 (GMT)Review: Bear in mind that the review comes from a Beatles fan with a bizarre sense of humour but this quirky collection of "Noughties" Swedish Beatles covers is fun- if you like the songs in the first place. It's good becuse it's weird. Who else would try this kind of thing but the Swedes? [Brazilians, Canadians, Argentinians, Americans, Liverpudlians...] "The Space Cakes" have turned out a moody version of "Love Me Do", which sounds as if "Shocking Blue" provided the guitar parts, "Booker T and the MGs" the organ, "The Boomtown Rats" the vocals and "The La's" the percussion. "Nice", as Louie Balfour would have said. "The Ravengers" handle "Things We Said Today" quite well. At least, unlike some other tribute artists, they were actually able to manage the changes. [There aren't exactly a lot of chords in it, are there?] Gentler and dreamier than the original, it's probably good to dance to, as well. "Inbetweendays" are the love children of "Alice Cooper" and "The Kinks". I appreciate what they were trying to do but perhaps John Lennon's Dylan parody, "You've got to hide your love away" was not the best song for them. Easy to listen to and bound to appeal to young North American rockers. "The Dilemas" started out thinking that they were contributing to a "Stones" tribute album but quickly realised the mistake and cobbled together an insensitive version of "Wait" which has been influenced by the Doors and Dr Hook. OK but the intricate timing of the original has been lost under all the twanging, fuzzing, show-off organ solos and tambourine-shaking. There's a short drum solo, which is clearly a nod in the direction of "The End" [Beatles, not Doors]. "Sharp Kiddie" sound a bit like "Procul Harum". I'm not a massive fan of early prog rock but this version of "If I needed somone" does sound like a 'Sixties record. The acoustic set-up is very good. Well done, chaps! "Taxman" by "Skainsmate" sounds like a Swedish version, produced within the last couple of years. Strange that! Heavily influenced by the original [i.e. nothing new added] but also reminiscent of "The B-52s" and "REM". Like, wo, enough of the drums, already, man. "The Persuaders" have a sound not unlike late 1970s groups, such as EL&P. Interesting but again "Tomorrow Never Knows", in which sounds effects and unusual techniques played such a crucial part, was an inappropriate choice of song for this group. "Sgt Pepper" conta...[reply to this topic ]

Richard M UNITED KINGDOM Created Thu 22nd Feb '07 15:44 (GMT)Review 5 out of 10. First disc pleasant enough but the second was pretty dreadful. The standard of musicianship was high but there was just no feeling to any of the performances. The recording was crystal clear but lacked any warmth or depth. It was as if computers had produced the whole thing. The choice of material didn't help. It's better for Beatles tribute artists to concentrate on the rock 'n' roll (and country 'n' western) numbers. Soul and psychedelia sound reidiculous, unless played with some verve. If you want a fun Beatles tribute album from Germany, look out for "The Beatles Revival Band", now available on CD. They used the right instruments, made the right sound [more like the Beatles live but better!] but sang in the "wrong" language! It's all very clever, though, and the end result is enjoyable, even if your German is a little rusty. It's a good excuse to get your phrase books out.[reply to this topic ]

Richard Austin - UK Office UNITED KINGDOM Created Wed 21st Feb '07 16:52 (GMT) Edited Thu 22nd Feb '07 10:44 (GMT)Living On An Island ... Anybody know anybody that collects records ? You know, the shiny round things.
Well, if you do see anyone and they remember the good old days of Gramophones, solid vinyl that you could build houses out of and times long before the invention of 5" digital bird scarers then they might want to know something.
If you really want to know & the name Chris Blackwell means something to you then this could be something that you'll want to own.
Founded in 1959 in Jamaica, Island Records became a household name after moving to the UK in 1962. From then until 1989 when Chris sold the label to Polygram, they became the biggest Independent Record label in history.
What a history that was - Ska, Reggae, early rock, folk ...
The label became synonymous with the ethos of the early pioneering A&R people, for whom the music mattered more than the commission, often creating a new market rather than simply finding the nearest band that sounds similar to the current flavour of the month. They took risks &, in doing so, brought some amazing music to our ears that these days wouldn't get signed as they wouldn't be 'economically viable'.
Finally somebody has sat down & compiled an extraordinary labour of love that details everything about the label - The designs, the logos, the sleeves, the bands. A complete 'anoraks' guide to the label & its releases from the early Blue Beat recordings through to the first releases of U2.
Three Hundred & Fifty Two lavishly illustrated pages in full colour with over 600 detailed label pictures & 270 sleeve illustrations!
The book was carefully researched & written by a Russian collector, Yuri Grishin, and has been issued as a limited edition of just one thousand copies worldwide. Each copy has been signed by the author.
The text is in both Russian & English and is poised to become THE definitive reference work for scholars & collectors of the label in years to come.
We have been lucky enough to obtain just EIGHT copies of this magnificent work, which can be pre-ordered
HERE - First come, first served !
