Lizard King Jim LA 69 Morpeth, Northumberland UNITED KINGDOM Created Sat 6th Dec '08 13:43 (GMT)The Doors vinyl box set The box consists of the 6 Morrison studio LPs in stereo in what is meant to replicate the original US packaging, including separate replica original paper inners, along with lined actual inners + a mono pressing of the first LP, all of which slide out of a black imitation snakeskin box in a cut-away inner section. So far so good. The 180g vinyl platters actually vary from 169g (what a rip-off – a trade descriptions prosecution is imminent) to 199g. I’ve never weighed vinyl before and don’t have many 180g LPs but I couldn’t resist weighing these purely out of interest, coming as they do from the same company in the same box, as you’d have thought they would all weigh more or less the same. It was certainly not what I expected. I have many criticisms of this vinyl box set: 1 only the first LP is presented in a mono pressing whereas the second and third albums were also issued in mono (certainly in the UK at least), so could and should have been included here too in mono: 2 there is nothing protecting the individual LP sleeves, hence they've rubbed against each other and are scuffed, thus looking like they have come from a pile of old vinyl albums in a charity shop i.e. less than new: 3 the 4 sides provided as a booklet is woefully inadequate for something so expensive, containing very little information, mainly relating to the general improvement in vinyl LP cutting and quality and the remastering (unfortunately digitally as it happens) and repressing of the LPs for the box: 4 the wrong (mono) catalogue number is used on the stereo copy of the first LP, where someone appears to have simply changed “mono” to “stereo” (come on every original Doors fan knows that EKS is the stereo prefix and EKL the mono): 5 the LP labels, stated to be replicas of the originals, are not all accurate in colour or content. As the replica inners are US issues and my originals are GB issues, the only one that I can say is accurate is the yellow “LA Woman” one, with the image of Morrison crucified on the telegraph pole on the back. As a GB buyer in 1971 I got a nice good-sized poster of that image free with the LP (not folded in the LP sleeve but separate and rolled into a tube). They could, perhaps, have thrown one of these in. Even this LP is not, however, an exact replica of the original (GB at least) issue as mine had lost the fancy “Doors” logo and simply bore the band’s name printed in normal typeface. A close look at each LP confirms mention ...[reply to this topic ]

davelane Whitstable, Kent UNITED KINGDOM Created Fri 28th Nov '08 12:16 (GMT)Who is Pauline Richardson? I am the proud owner of a copy of this album. Mine has the name Pauline Richardson written after 'With Best Wishes to...'. However, I can't find any reference to this person. Does anyone know who she is and/or how she was connected to the film? By the way, my copy is in fantastic condition having been played perhaps only three times. My mother gave it to me a few years ago - I remember her telling me that it was given to her by someone who worked on the film who wasn't a Cliff fan. Neither was my mother, but she kept it and the album remained untouched for over forty years![reply to this topic ]

vinyldisc USA Created Tue 25th Nov '08 23:42 (GMT)Fred McDowell Mississippi Delta Blues ARHOOLIE F 1021 Fred McDowell Mississippi Delta Blues ARHOOLIE F 1021 - Write Me A Few Lines - Louise - I Heard Somebody Call - 61 Highway - Mama Don't Allow Me - Kokomo Blues - Fred's Worried Life Blues - You Gonna Be Sorry - Shake 'Em On Down - My Trouble Blues - Black Minnie - That's Alright - When I Lay My Burden Down * rec: Feb 13/14, 1964 in Como, Miss. by Chris Strachwitz: Fred McDowell, vox, guitar: *Annie Mae McDowell, vox In 1959 folklorist Alan Lomax traveled around the southern United States recording the music he heard in the fields. He was the first to capture Fred McDowell on tape, including a few of McDowell's songs on an Atlantic Records LP and thus introducing McDowell's sound to a huge audience. Suddenly, at age 55, the guitarist was lauded as a great "new" discovery in the blues world. When Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie Productions heard the Atlantic record in 1964, he immediately contacted Lomax in order to find McDowell. Strachwitz traveled to Como, Mississippi, where McDowell lived with his wife, Annie Mae, and began a long friendship with them that included a great deal of recording. With each recording, and with every appearance at a major folk or blues festival, McDowell's status as a blues hero grew. Although most of McDowell's early work was performed on acoustic guitars, he made blues history in Great Britain when he recorded an album there using an electric guitar. The Chicago blues was played on electric, but the Delta blues had always been played on acoustic. Reaction to his electric bottleneck was mixed, but McDowell was so tickled by the electric slide that he never went back to his acoustic guitar. McDowell learned what he knew studying the Mississippi bluesmasters who came before him in the late 1920s and early 1930s: Charlie Patton, Son House, Big Joe Williams, and Robert Johnson. His own music became part of the folk blues revival of the 1960s, and it was McDowell and those like him who passed the sounds on to the next generation. Legendary rockers the Rolling Stones were impressed with McDowell's early recording of "You Gotta Move." Strongly influenced by his style, they recorded their own version of the track on their Sticky Fingers album. When McDowell received his first substantial royalties from the song, it was the most money he had ever seen...[reply to this topic ]
Saul Watson - Product Promotion UNITED KINGDOM Created Tue 25th Nov '08 16:19 (GMT) Edited Tue 25th Nov '08 16:19 (GMT)Admit it, you thought it would never happen If you asked your average rock fan they would probably have said that there was more chance of the CIA admitting their part in the assasination of Kennedy and Ringo Starr signing another autograph than the new Guns N Roses album seeing daylight. Well guess what? After 17 years, a million false starts and a revolving door policy on guitarists and producers the most anticipated and hyped album ever, dropped on to my desk. :: :: Guns N' Roses, Chinese Democracy.
So what was I expecting? Well, after hearing countless leaked tracks over the last ten years I just hoped the production had improved and the majority of the dross I had heard hadn't made the final cut. I was relieved to both counts.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Will it become a classic like Appetite for Destruction? No. Is it a good album? Surprisingly, Yes.
Not sure why I was suprised really, after all Axl Rose has always had a good turn of lyric and a great ear for melody which has been at the surface of all the previous GNR albums.
On the new album the stand out tracks 'Shackler's Revenge', 'Better', 'Street Of Dreams', 'I.R.S', 'Catcher In The Rye' and 'Riad And the Bedouins' all benefit from Axl's talents and their are definite glimpses of the past glories. If I was being honest then their are maybe 3 songs too many on the album but I guess if you’ve waited nearly two decades to release your new album then you want to cram as much on it as possible.
It’s all too easy to say "It's not Guns N' Roses." Or, "Slash would’ve played that better". Well he may well have played it better but he didn’t and isn’t likely too so move past it.
The musicianship however ::is of a very high standard as you'd expect form a control freak perfectionist like Mr Rose. There are certain elements of an industrial sound in places and a gentle leaning towards Metallica in others but to counter balance that you'll find a couple of sweeping piano led songs that would have sat snugly next to November Rain on the Illusion albums of so long ago.
When all is said and done the album is finally out there and people can now stop talking about it in a mythical way.
As I said earlier, its b no means a classic but it is a strong rock album and believe you me there are many a young rock band ...
