Living On An Island ...
Anybody know anybody that collects records ?
You know, the shiny round things.

Well, if you do see anyone and they remember the good old days of Gramophones, solid vinyl that you could build houses out of and times long before the invention of 5" digital bird scarers then they might want to know something.

If you really want to know & the name Chris Blackwell means something to you then this could be something that you'll want to own.

Founded in 1959 in Jamaica, Island Records became a household name after moving to the UK in 1962. From then until 1989 when Chris sold the label to Polygram, they became the biggest Independent Record label in history.

What a history that was - Ska, Reggae, early rock, folk ...

The label became synonymous with the ethos of the early pioneering A&R people, for whom the music mattered more than the commission, often creating a new market rather than simply finding the nearest band that sounds similar to the current flavour of the month. They took risks &, in doing so, brought some amazing music to our ears that these days wouldn't get signed as they wouldn't be 'economically viable'.

Finally somebody has sat down & compiled an extraordinary labour of love that details everything about the label - The designs, the logos, the sleeves, the bands. A complete 'anoraks' guide to the label & its releases from the early Blue Beat recordings through to the first releases of U2.

Three Hundred & Fifty Two lavishly illustrated pages in full colour with over 600 detailed label pictures & 270 sleeve illustrations!

The book was carefully researched & written by a Russian collector, Yuri Grishin, and has been issued as a limited edition of just one thousand copies worldwide. Each copy has been signed by the author.

The text is in both Russian & English and is poised to become THE definitive reference work for scholars & collectors of the label in years to come.

We have been lucky enough to obtain just EIGHT copies of this magnificent work, which can be pre-ordered HERE - First come, first served !

A Little Update....

Good Morning to you my Music loving friends....

I hope you all had a great weekend; Guillemots at Brixton on Friday night were as always - blimmin' awesome. I love those 'mots VERY much and I can't wait until they are back on the road. Saturday morning was spent at the cinema watching 'Music & Lyrics', I would recommend it if you want a giggle, and fancy watching Hugh Grant shake his booty along to some great '80s style pop. And then Sunday I didn't feel too good so I did what any girl who feels poorly does - I went a bought a BIG bar of chocolate which I then went on to devour throughout the afternoon!!

Anyhow, back to business, so far this week I have added titles from Simply Red, The Horrors, Mr Hudson & The Library, Richard Swift, Donny Osmond, LCD Soundsystem, Talk Talk, Biffy Clyro, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Charlotte Hatherley, Enter Shikari, Marty Wilde, The Supremes, Sex Pistols, Lily Allen, Joss Stone, Corinne Bailey Rae, Asian Dub Foundation, Jet, Regina Spektor, Mint Royale, Madness and Good Charlotte!!

Storm Has Passed: Ian Astbury and his stint as Jim Morrison replacement in The Doors outfit 'Riders On The Storm' seems to have run its course. For the last 4 years he has performed as frontman alongside original Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger. Astbury has now released a statement announcing he'll end his association with The Doors members so he can reboot his own band The Cult.

Live Music SOS: Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lenny Kravitz, Foo Fighters and Muse are amongst some of the artists joining forces to highlight concerns of a new climate change campaign called Save Our Selves (SOS). Happy Chinese New Year !
In case you didn't know ...

Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later.

The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29½ days. In order to catch up with the solar calendar, the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a nineteen year cycle), which is the equivalent of adding an extra day for leap year. This is why the Chinese New Year falls on a different date every year.

The first day of the Lunar New Year is "the welcoming of the Gods of the heavens and earth".
Many people abstain from meat on the first day because it is believed that this will ensure long and happy lives.

On the second day, the Chinese pray to their ancestors as well as to all the Gods.
They are extra kind to dogs and feed them well as it is believed that the second day is also the birthday of all dogs.

The third and fourth days are for the sons-in-laws to pay respect to their parents-in-law.

The fifth day is called Po Woo. On that day people stay home to welcome the God of Wealth.
No one visits families and friends on the fifth day because it will bring both parties bad luck.

On the sixth to tenth days, the Chinese visit their relatives and friends freely. They also visit temples to pray for good fortune and health.

The seventh day of the New Year is the day for farmers to display their produce. These farmers make a drink from seven types of vegetables to celebrate the occasion.
The seventh day is also considered the birthday of human beings.
Noodles are eaten to promote longevity and raw fish for success.

On the eighth day the Fujian people have another family reunion dinner & at midnight they pray to Tian Gong, the God of Heaven.

The ninth day is to make offerings to the Jade Emperor.

The tenth to the twelfth are days that friends and relatives should be invited for dinner.
After so much rich food, on the thirteenth day you should have simple rice congee and mustard greens (choi sum) to cleanse the system.

The fourteenth day should be for preparations to celebrate the Lantern Festival which is to be held on the fifteenth night.

Have Fun & enjoy the celebrations!

Object and Illusion!

Hello Everyone.  Check out this amazing Led Zeppelin "Object" -- legendary and rarely offered for sale, this cool and official statuette served as the mysterious table setting on the cover of the Presence album in 1976.  This numbered edition was manufactured in a limited run of 1,000, many of which have not survived the last 30 years half as well as this beautiful specimen.  On the Guns 'n' Roses front, check out this official Triple-Platinum US award for the Use Your Illusion album set, which was commissioned by the band to reward a select few individuals who were influential to the success of the album.  Have a great week, everyone!

Jimi Jimi Jimi

Well another item that deserves a 'trumpet fanfare', with this ORIGINAL 'Pen, Ink & Pencil' drawing done by Jimi circa 1968. A pyschedelic stain glass style which depicts Noel, Mitch and himself which Jimi has additionally initialled J.H and dated 1968. This amazing piece of artwork has a long existing fold dating back many years, but would be hardly visible when framed. The item was previously puchased from Noel Redding in 1994 & has a hand written signed note on the reverse confirming it was from his personal collection.

 A Piece of rock history.

Crew-only clothing!
A new development of recent years in the musical collecting world has been the collectibilty of promotional or tour crew-only clothing, which was never available as merchandise to the general public. We have acquired many items over the years and recently had access to a whole batch of original Rolling Stones jackets/clothing which are sure to be sought after by collectors and sartorially elegant people alike.

Check them out and await the forthcoming stunning crew-only t-shirts to impress your friends with as well!

Folk Rock and Prog week

I've got a few weird and wonderful items to highlight for you today. Firstly I've aquired three of the four spectacular albums by Cambridge based folk-rock band Spriguns, Time Will Pass, Magic Lady and Revel Weird And Wild. All three albums are in stunning condition and though I'd like to say they are unplayed, it's not true as we gave each of them a spin in the office - purely for audio grading of course (well that's my excuse). They are beautiful and better copies you'll not find.

The other LP I'd like to share with you today is the legendary Magic Shoemaker by Fire. For those of you that are unfamiliar It's an extremely rare and sought after concept album set in the context of a fairytale story told to a group of children on a coach journey. It was composed and narrated by David Labert (who later joined The Strawbs) who was very much the brains behind the group. The albums finer moments include the opening cut 'Children Of Imagination', the r 'n'b tinted 'I Can See The Sky' and the experimental passage between 'Reason For Everything' and 'Only A Dream'. This LP is in beautiful condition too and like the Spriguns albums did get a spin on the office turntable.

…2-disc set comprising of a 22 track CD album plus plus DVD containing 26 TV & studio performances plus BONUS interviews & live footage!

One of the best and most commercially successful pop/rock acts of the British Invasion, when the Hollies began recording in 1963, they relied heavily upon the R&B/early rock & roll covers that provided the staple diet for countless British bands of the time. They quickly developed a more distinctive style of three-part harmonies [heavily influenced by the Everly Brothers], ringing guitars, and hook-happy material, penned by both outside writers [especially Graham Gouldman] and themselves, eventually composing most of their repertoire on their own. The best early Hollies records evoke an infectious, melodic cheer similar to that of the early Beatles.
