Government Plans Live Noise Restriction
Live music in the UK is apparently under threat as the government is reportedly planning to introduce new laws that will force all live music venues to fit noise limiting devices.
 :

According to a new online petition all venues that are applying or re-applying for their entertainment license will need to pay for and fit a noise limiting device. The worry is that either venues will not be able to afford the limiting device, and that the ones that do will see the sound quality/atmosphere/fun taken out of live shows.

 :

In 2008 Bruce Springsteen was forced to put in place a noise cancelling curtain at his Emirates Stadium shows, and for many the effect was that the gig was simply too quiet and it ruined what was a great performance from the band.

 :

According to the new petition, which has just over 20,000 votes, “the government wish to consider it a legal requirement in the new tax year to introduce laws insisting anyone applying or re-applying for an entertainment license must have a noise control device fitted to the venue. ::

 :

This will be the final NAIL for ALL entertainment in the UK as the level at which these devices CUT you off is dreadfully low and damaging.”

Revived 45 heads for 60th birthday
As the production line grinds to its own industrial beat, it's clear that music formats don't get any more physical than this. Downloads and iPods are all very well, but for many musicians, your latest song just hasn't been released until it's been forced on to a small, grooved plastic disc at a pressure of more than 2,000 lb per square inch. The Wombats and Franz Ferdinand are among the artists whose seven-inch vinyl records are being sleeved and boxed at the Portalspace factory in Hayes, on the edge of west London. As it happens, they are the latest in a venerable tradition. The 45 rpm single is about to reach its 60th anniversary and despite repeated predictions of its demise, sales are rising once again.

Jon Lord On “Hot Air &::: Wild Speculation”: Jon Lord has seemingly poured cold water on the rumours about a Mk.III Deep Purple reunion, calling it “hot air and wild speculations.”

After Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich half-jokingly offered to fill in for Ian Paice on any reunion, should Paice be unavailable due to commitments with the current Deep Purple, rumours began to circulate that the Mk.III line-up may play some dates this year. However, Jon Lord has moved to quell the growing enthusiasm. In a post on his website he says: “It all seems like a lot of hot air and wild speculation to me. “I like Lars and what he has achieved with Metallica. He’s obviously always been very complementary in his comments about DP, and I love the story of his famous nine-years-old “baptism of fire” at our ‘73 concert in The KB Halle in Copenhagen, but if I was asked to be involved in a “Mark III” reunion - (which, by the way, I haven’t. All I ever said was that the idea had a few good points and a few not-so-good points.) - and I indeed considered that offer, I would not be able to even imagine it without the presence of Ian Paice.”

Stooges Guitarist Found Dead: Ron Asheton, guitarist with influential rockers The Stooges, has been found dead at the age of 60.

Asheton formed The Stooges along with his brother Scott, school friend Dave Alexander and singer Iggy Pop. Their heavy-duty garage rock was an early prototype for punk rock while they have also been named as influences by a number of hard rock bands over the years. Guns n Roses, The Sex Pistols, Nirvana and The White Stripes have all named The Stooges as great influences.

Asheton appeared on all four Stooges albums, including 2007’s comeback album The Weirdness and was ranked at number 29 in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time. The Stooges paid tribute to Asheton in a joint statement that said "We are shocked and shaken by the news of Ron's death. He was a great friend, brother, musician, trooper. Irreplaceable. He will be missed.

"For all that knew him behind the facade of Mr Cool &::: Quirky, he was a kind-hearted, genuine, warm person who always believed that people meant well even if they did not.” Cause of death has not yet been established, but early reports suggest that a heart attack may be responsible.

Planet Rock News:
Fish Forced To Take A Break: ::Former Marillion frontman Fish has been forced to take an extended break from music after a cancer scare.

In a post on his MySpace page, the Planet Rock presenter revealed that prior to his recent tour a visit to the doctor had revealed a “worrying” patch of “irregular cell growth” on his vocal chords. On doctor’s advice the tour was able to go ahead but as soon as the last show ended in Buxton a few weeks ago Fish headed into hostpial for a biopsy on the cells and he’s currently awaiting the results.

Fish will now be taking time off from music for the foreseeable future, and although he hopes to do some gigs next year it’s possible that we may not see him on stage until 2010.

“In all honesty I am 50 year old, I smoke(d), drink, have a "colourful" history, have sung nearly 1700 gigs in 27 years and have conducted probably three times as many interviews. It's like standing on the M1 and expecting not to be hit by a car,” he says in his blog.

“I am taking at least 6 months off from singing. I'd like to think that I can play
ome festivals in the summer of 2009 but there will be no arranged tours until 2010. I don't plan to even contemplate a new album until the end of next year. It all depends on what happens in the coming weeks. There are no set plans for any musical activity at the moment or in the near future.

“Either way I intend to get to work on that elusive novel and start studying and writing screenplays. My acting career I would like to reopen and I definitely want to spend a lot more time at home.

“There are bundles of unwrapped cunning plans. It's a bit scary as I haven't had a "blank" year for as long as I can remember and the prospect of being "unemployed" is quite weird! It's an exhilarating time and not since I left my forestry career behind in 1980 have I found myself in such an exciting and frightening position in my life.”

Get well soon, Fish.

Scotland Honours AC/DC: A Scottish MSP has lodged a parliamentary motion to have the achievements of AC/DC acknowledged officially.

South Of Scotland MSP Christine Grahame has put forward a motion entitled AC/DC We Salute You which aims to acknowledge the band’s Scottish roots and their continuing success and influence across the world.

Admit it, you thought it would never happen
If you asked your average rock fan they would probably have said that there was more chance of the CIA admitting their part in the assasination of Kennedy and Ringo Starr signing another autograph than the new Guns N Roses album seeing daylight. Well guess what? After 17 years, a million false starts and a revolving door policy on guitarists and producers the most anticipated and hyped album ever, dropped on to my desk. :: :: Guns N' Roses, Chinese Democracy.

So what was I expecting? Well, after hearing countless leaked tracks over the last ten years I just hoped the production had improved and the majority of the dross I had heard hadn't made the final cut. I was relieved to both counts.

Is it a masterpiece? No. Will it become a classic like Appetite for Destruction? No. Is it a good album? Surprisingly, Yes.

Not sure why I was suprised really, after all Axl Rose has always had a good turn of lyric and a great ear for melody which has been at the surface of all the previous GNR albums.

On the new album the stand out tracks 'Shackler's Revenge', 'Better', 'Street Of Dreams', 'I.R.S', 'Catcher In The Rye' and 'Riad And the Bedouins' all benefit from Axl's talents and their are definite glimpses of the past glories. If I was being honest then their are maybe 3 songs too many on the album but I guess if you’ve waited nearly two decades to release your new album then you want to cram as much on it as possible.

It’s all too easy to say "It's not Guns N' Roses." Or, "Slash would’ve played that better". Well he may well have played it better but he didn’t and isn’t likely too so move past it.

The musicianship however ::is of a very high standard as you'd expect form a control freak perfectionist like Mr Rose. There are certain elements of an industrial sound in places and a gentle leaning towards Metallica in others but to counter balance that you'll find a couple of sweeping piano led songs that would have sat snugly next to November Rain on the Illusion albums of so long ago.

When all is said and done the album is finally out there and people can now stop talking about it in a mythical way.

As I said earlier, its b no means a classic but it is a strong rock album and believe you me there are many a young rock band ...

Whitney Hou- the hell is that?
Now, I'm a big fan of photoshop but do the people at Arista records really think they can get away with this?

Whitney Hoston has had more than her fair share of issues over the last few years and last time out looked ravagged by drink and drugs. Now, if she has managed to do a full 360 and come out fighting looking like she does on the cover of her new album, then fair play to the woman.

Planet Rock News:
The Faces Are Back: Rod Stewart has finally confirmed that the Faces are to reform – and they start rehearsals next week.

Raysgigs.com reports that at a sw**ky event at Claridges last night Rod revealed the information, saying that the band will be meeting up as soon as next week to start preparing.

According to Raysgigs.com “This Monday Rod is meeting up with Ronnie Wood and the others in the studio for their first rehearsal. Just to check if they can remember the songs. They will use Rod's current tour bass player as Ronnie Lane has sadly passed away.”

The much touted reunion has been fuelling the rumour mill for several years, and this year both Ronnie Wood and Ian McClagan have spoken about the likelihood that the band would reunite at some point in 2009.

Providing the rehearsals go as planned, a world tour in 2009 is likely – and will be sure to generate a huge amount of interest, with many fans feeling that The Faces ended prematurely in 1975 when Ronnie Wood joined the Stones.

Hendrix's drummer Mitchell dies: ::: Mitch Mitchell, the British drummer in the seminal 1960s band the Jimi Hendrix Experience, has been found dead in his US hotel room, authorities say.

The 61-year-old was discovered in the Benson Hotel in Portland, Oregon, in the early hours of Wednesday.
A medical examiner told Associated Press news agency the death appeared to be from natural causes but that there would be an autopsy.

Mitchell, from Ealing in west London, had been touring with the Experience Hendrix Tour.

Mitchell drummed for Hendrix at his legendary Woodstock performance
He performed on Hendrix classics such as Are You Experienced? Electric Ladyland and Axis: Bold As Love.
The top session drummer also played with the likes of Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Keith Richards and Muddy Waters. A musical pioneer, he is credited with helping to develop a "fusion" drumming style that combined rock with jazz.

He joined the Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1966 and backed the rocker for his legendary performance at Woodstock three years later.

Jack Bruce: Led Zep Were Crap
Jack Bruce launched an amazing tirade against Led Zeppelin last night at the Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards in London.

After he had collected the award for Cream’s Classic Album Classic Rock Magazine’s Dave Ling caught up with the legendary bassist for a quick interview.

After being asked about any more Cream reunions here’s what happened:

Dave Ling: It’s good news that there might be more from Cream.

Jack Bruce: Well, the trouble is that I’m doing so many amazing things on my own. Cream is just a band from many, many years ago, and we did do something [the reunion shows in 2005]… Everybody talks about Led Zeppelin, and they played one f***ing gig – one f***ing lame gig – while Cream did weeks of gigs: proper gigs, not just a lame gig like Zeppelin did, with all the keys lowered and everything. We played everything in the original keys. F**k off, Zeppelin, you’re crap. You’ve always been crap and you’ll never be anything else. The worst thing is that people believe the crap that they’re sold. Cream is ten times the band that Led Zeppelin is.

DL: That’s a bold opinion.

JB: What? You’re gonna compare Eric Clapton with that f***ing Jimmy Page? Would you really compare that?

DL: To be fair, they’re different kinds of player, aren’t they?

JB: No! Eric’s good and Jimmy’s crap. And with that I rest my case.
