Best gig ever ?
Well, I've been to a LOT of gigs but ... completely blown away.

Tal Wilkenfeld was a revelation. Only been playing bass for four years ?

With luck there'll be a DVD coming out so you can see what you missed.

I just didn't want to go home.

Happy December, Everyone.  I've visited seven American states in the last seven days, trying to buy as many quality records and compact discs as possible without losing patience in crazy -- and occasionally snowbound -- holiday traffic.  Yes, every airplane on which I travelled was a Screaming Baby Express, and every turnpike, parkway, and highway down which I drove was a Road Rage Extravaganza.  But with the promise of hot Pasticcio at roadside Greek Diners to keep me fueled, I endured.. and thrived!  The buzz word among collectors these days seems to be SEALED.  Everyone seems to want first-edition vinyl releases in their ORIGINAL shrink-wrap, as sold in American record stores for decades.  Among the top specimens I submit for your approval this week include two sealed gems from the 1970's.  First, check out this legendary LP produced by John Lennon & Yoko Ono on the Apple Label: David Peel & Lower East Side's "The Pope Smokes Dope".  If your collection is missing this item, but you'd rather play it than just...

Unusual Un-cuts...
Amongst the more obscure type of vinyl collectable are 'un-cut' shaped picture discs, which are in effect a very limited type of test pressing to check both the sound quality AND the actual image itself before the commercially available shaped discs were manufactured.

Some of the limited edition shaped discs from yesterday year are sought after nowadays, let alone these pre-production items and we have a handful of such in-stock now, ranging from artists as diverse as Alice Cooper to Cliff Richard & from Van Halen to Madonna.

Enjoy your weekend.

Still The Guv'nor ...Just read the reviews HEREHERE or HERE and it basically says all I would have said. See you Saturday, all those of you not hyped into parting with your hard earned on a promise, but prefer to see the real thing !

This is a master at the peak of his craft with a top notch band in a tiny little club. It couldn't be better.

If you haven't got a ticket yet, sell your body, your Granny, your car, whatever it takes. If you miss these shows at Ronnies you'll have the rest of your life to kick yourself ...

On the Road Again.......
Not much has changed since yesterday to be honest! I have some nice appointments in the pipeline over the next few days, including a return trip to go through a collection of approximately 7000 items! There is a chance we may be getting ONE of the really rare Led Zeppelin Lacie Hard Drives that are being offered as competition prizes all over the net right now. These things are as rare as hens teeth - only 100 were made to promote the Mothership album. If you are interested in purchasing this item drop me a line and if I get one I will give you a call, steve@991.com

I eat, therefore I am.
Unless you're a small famished rodent, it seems !

I did wonder just how something with legs only this big managed to get into a roof anyway without the aid of scaffolding or a passing assault team & ended up with this vision of a highly trained group of pole vaulting super rats scaling the outer walls then using grappling hooks for the last tricky bit.
Must stop eating cheese just before bedtime ....

Well, I've just finished my sticky bun, so am now ready to resume my labours.
Speaking of eating, Catbeast was most pleased with my latest discovery, 'Feline Fayre' white meat Tuna & Prawn which is now the ONLY acceptable food bowl filling. I've created another rod for my own back here.

How is it that they can eat through a bowl full of seriously mixed up food, yet still manage to push to one side anything they don't like ? How does this food radar work ?
Catbeast doesn't quite understand prawns, so I return to find a clean bowl with a little pile of prawns in it.
Amazing animals & they're apparently quite good at catching rats too, so I hear....

Perhaps if you started a competing nest of cats in your attic you might ease the wear on your spade :-)

Sorting Sorting Sorting
Busy, busy, busy - That's me! I am surrounded by boxes of LP's and CD's awaiting my attention. This is always my busiest time of year, yet I'm still never quite prepared for how hectic it gets!
Yesterday I was out on the road looking at 3 different collections. The first may see me secure some very nice new highly desirable promo bits - though I am awaiting final confirmation so I can't give too much away. The second collection found me going through a dark, cold storage unit for a couple of hours. My hands were numb but I did find a few gems in there, including this PJ Harvey box, this South African Queen album and a ton of old deleted CD singles, many of which are 2-CD sets (Needless to say all this stock needs sorting) My last visit was more a preliminary look at a large collection containing 6000+ items. I will be returning Friday for a thorough look before choosing what stuff to buy.

Whilst running around the country during the day, I have been spending my evening (yes evenings) sorting through the plethora of goodies so that you can all stock up in time for Xmas. I still have lots of REALLY cool stuff from my excursion with Julian last week including a very rare US white label promo copy of The Stooges Funhouse LP. Keep checking my latest arrivals, til next time.....

The Rat Pack

Unfortunately, in
this instance, I am not referring to the sublime talents of Messrs Sinatra,
Martin & Davis Jr. No, this time the particular pack of rats keeping me
awake at night are of the brown, furry rattus rattus kind. One of the downsides
of living beside a stables is that Roland & his mates occasionally like
to play in & pray upon the corn in the chicken run. Saxo, Crispy and Hooter
don't seem to mind, but I certainly do. And now the long tailed vermin have
decided that the loft space inside my house is far nicer & warmer than the
tunnels they've dug beneath the chicken house. Christ knows what they do up
there but enough is enough - it sounds like they're eating their way through
fibreglass, plasterboard and 400 year old oak beams, and the feckers are keeping me
awake all night with their hob-nail pitter patter paws. In fact, last night I
actually leapt out of bed and punched the wall (ergo thumb now swollen & bruised!)
but when I went outside this morning I had obviously shocked one of them
straight off the roof as it made its final leap into thin air and gravity took
over, followed by a heart-felt whack from me with a spade, just to make sure.
Having already poisoned, drowned or shot a dozen of them, number 13 felt very
satisfying indeed. But I know they'll be back so the battle rages on. It ain't
over 'till the rat lady swings!

Homeward bound!!

After a flying visit to the Kent office, Saturday saw the 2 day record fair at Olympia [starting with a superb cooked breakfast from a chap who I am reliably informed is a 'Diamond Geezer'] along with fellow buyer Mark who curiously was missing most of the day buying edible panties from a girl in Cleethorpes stalling out at the Erotica exhibition. I on the other hand kept to the work at hand and sourced a superb array of tasty pieces including Promotional U2 Helmet, Oasis Vox Box, Oasis Be Here Now Sealed CD box set and many more!!

Then it was back up the motorway for a 250 mile burn up to arrive home in time for a Curry - Ah the glamour of a day in the life of a buyer. Incidentally if you were the git in the Audi that decided to nearly run me off the road in my new car in central london - thanks - I do have your registration number and will be paying a visit with 2 tons of rancid manure to your home.

Remember - Never upset a northerner!!

Was the order of the day for Saturday with an early start for the annual Wembley record fair (relocated to Olympia) where mucho product was obtained for your delectation so keeping checking back this week for all my latest arrivals.
And we didn't even make it to the adjoining venue where the Erotica 07 festival was being held - Honest!

Home for a quick torment of the pet ferret then down to a freezing cold Brighton where, i had found out earlier that day, there was to be a one-off gig by the legendary Johnny Moped in some suitably scuzzy venue, the Ocean Rooms and a fine evening was had by one and all.

Altogether now '1-2, cut your hair...'

Whole Lotta Zep
Apologies for the lack of updates over the last week. If you've read Julian's recent update you'll know that we've had a really hectic week. Utrecht was great (as expected) and we came back with the car rammed floor to ceiling with goodies, most of which have kept Richard busy all week long.
Then not one but two great things happened Wednesday - firstly we headed off to see one of our regular US suppliers who'd flown in for the large record show in London. He always has really nice hard to find, beautiful condition vinyl rarities and this visit was no exception. We had first look at his stock and walked away with such things as Bruce Springsteen Born To Run Script cover and some 1960's sealed Dylan LP's - lots of this stuff should be on the website already but there are still some gems to add.
The other exciting thing that happened Wednesday - I GOT ZEPPELIN TICKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YUP my name came out of the last ballot. This ballot was for the returns where people couldn't make the alternate date. Can't believe my luck, anyone wanna buy my spare - I hear they're only about £1200 on a certain auction site......

THE OBJECT -- click HERE!!Look, Everyone! It's Steve!!MUST... KEEP... EATING!!Led Zep!

Hi Everyone.  How unthinkable to have the Flu on Thanksgiving, but fate dealt me that cruel hand this week on my favorite holiday of the year.  Sufficiently medicated and slightly dizzy, I still managed to force down significant amounts of Turkey and Stuffing, plus the usual fare: creamed turnips, mashed potatoes, biscuits, blueberry pie, and anything else that came within 20 inches of my mouth.  As I write this, the outside temperature is a frigid 24F degrees, and I've had my caffeine infusion to at least afford me a few more hours of record buying.  It's been difficult to keep track of the items I've bought recently, as they have been selling faster than I've had a chance to call your attention to them.  I've heard that intrepid UK Esprit buyer Steve won the ticket lottery, and will soon be seeing the Led Zeppelin reunion concert in London.  Don't be jealous!  If you cannot attend the concert, yourself, you still have one opportunity to purchase one of the most legendary, official Zeppelin collectables ever manufactured, The Object.  Distributed as a limited edition in 1976 to call attention to the mysterious monolith depicted on the cover of the Presence album, we have but thi...

Way back when
Nov. 23, 1889: The first jukebox is installed at the Palais Royale Saloon in San Francisco. It becomes an overnight sensation and its popularity spreads around the world.

That first jukebox was constructed by the Pacific Phonograph Company. Four stethoscope-like tubes were attached to an Edison Class M electric phonograph fitted inside an oak cabinet. The tubes operated individually, each being activated by the insertion of a coin, meaning that four different listeners could be plugged in to the same song simultaneously.

Towels were supplied to patrons so they could wipe off the end of the tube after each listening.
The success of the jukebox eventually spelled the end of the player piano (except nobody told Elton or Richard Clayderman), then the most common way of pounding out popular music to a line of thirsty barflies.

The machine was originally called the “nickel-in-the-slot player” by Louis Glass, the entrepreneur who installed it at the Palais Royale. It came to be known as the jukebox only later, although the origin of the word remains a bit vague. It may derive from “juke house,” a slang reference to bawdy house, where music was not unknown.

My stall is in flames
It's been a bumper
week for new arrivals on the stock front.  Last weekend's Utrecht mega fair
yielded, as expected, an amazing haul of rarities from all corners. We spent
enough money to run a small country and returned with a particularly eclectic
mix of the weird & wonderful; hundred & thousand £s vinyl sitting
happily alongside a nice collection of Roger Whittaker German language CD
singles!  Not content with just European vinyl, Steve and I viewed on Wednesday
a stunning collection of US vinyl, all 60s & 70s artists, including a cool
pair of LP acetates for the Bee Gees Sgt. Pepper soundtrack complete with a
sealed copy of the finished LP, not to mention sealed or mint original vinyl
from Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Soft Machine, Iggy, The Stooges, Uncle Frank, Capt.
Beefheart, Bob Seger, MC5, The Fugs, Judy Henske, etc. plus a Rutles LP &
press kit with t-shirt & badges, a Stones Tour Of The Americas '75 tour
press kt and many other top-end collectables. Richard will begin adding this
collection today so check out the latest arrivals for some amazing items, some
of which we're unlikley to find again in such perfect condition. The
rollercoaster ride continues this weekend when we attend the Olympia music mania
fair in London. Although if you fancy a ride of a different sort I understand
the adjacent hall is hosting the 2007 Erotica show...nothing to do with Madonna
either!

With deepest sympathy
It may be round & made of dead animals but it still seems to be able to reduce grown men to tears!Just a quick note as apparently, judging by the collective hangovers, long faces, red rimmed eyes & black armbands, something distressing has happened. I know it has something to do with a big gathering around a field.
A bit like 'One Man And His Dog' but without the dog or the sheep.

From what I can gather the Croatian Morris out-danced the England Morris or something like that.

Be strong.

It's all part of the turning of the wheel, so you never know we could win Eurovision this year.

I can feel your pain, but how can we uphold the great tradition of supporting the underdog without having an underdog to support ?

I did read a book on the subject once in an attempt to understand my fellow man, 'Fever Pitch' by Nick Hornby, and it quite clearly stated that the regular disappointment is part of the fun. I was confused too, but there it was in black & white.

I got lost when I attempted to view one of these rituals because I'm sure that the one dressed in black that runs around should have a crow's hat & there was nobody evident waving the bladder. Apparently we were kicking it instead. So easy for an outsider to see the simple mistake that was made there !

Onward & upward chaps !

Next time we'll enter for the stick dance ...

Clack, Clack, OUCH !!! Where's the beer tent ?

Let's Have A Party !!
Is it 'Bring A Bottle' or what ?Well, looks like I've been left all alone in the shed (sorry, Hollywood House) today, so I invited a few mates over for a party.
After grooving to the polyrhythmic density of the Crim, we washed it down with lashings of the fluidity of Allan Holdsworth then rounded off nicely with the magnificent Grace.

I could even treat myself to some Uncle Frank without the usual non stop bleating from 'Blues Boy' Borkowski that there are too many chords in it.

Choices, choices ...

Mind you, being well stricken in years, I suppose it is really time for my ritual watering, rub down & afternoon nap - Nurse ? Nurse !!!

There Can Be Only One?
After 20 years of business you'd think we've pretty much seen every rarity the world has to offer, especially by a band such a Queen. Not So. I got excited when I found something which until Saturday I believed to be nothing more than a myth. Well I can now confirm that the item in question, a  fold-out picture sleeve for the UK 7" A Kind Of Magic, DOES exist - and we've got one!!!!! Now in my 6 years at EIL I have seen half a dozen (or more) Blue Vinyl Bohemian Rhapsody 7"s, two sets of the Virgin Radio 12" and lots of other rarities besides - but this is the first time I have seen this item and based on the reseach I have been doing it it the ONLY one that has come up for sale!

Now I've been a Queen fan since 1986 - I remember the exact point when I became a fan too. I was watching my black and white portable TV and Channel4 were broadcasting the Wembley gig. I was bored, switching channels and caught the concert part way through - I was hooked.

That story ties in quite nicely with this item as the sleeve was issued as a promotional item by Channel4 as a tool to sell advertising during the broadcast.

For the full details and detailed descrition on this item click here. If you're interested in buying it - don't hang around as it could be another 20 years before another one turns up!
