Musings of a Blog type kind ...
Hi all,
As this is designed to let you see below the surface of the team here, rather than being merely another product page, I have decided to wax lyrical about a typical day at Esprit Towers.

The day begins with a flurry of rushing around (normally to get that first coffee!) then settles to deal with the treasures of the day.

The beauty of this is that every day is a surprise & the only thing that you can be certain of is that your day will be unlikely to remain as you planned it the night before. One phone call & one of our devoted buyer team could be suddenly sent out on the road to collect more rarities for you all, forcing a re-juggle of tasks. They could then come back with something amazing and change the priorities of everything that you are doing. You have to be very flexible, but you are seldom bored!

During the day you will see a plethora of items pass before your eyes, everything from ancient legendary vinyl such as the near mythical Arnold Layne demo 7" to the cosmic grooviness of your very own Iron Maiden incense sticks.

Occasionally you will pass some strange twilight creatures muttering about something called 'football' or the even stranger ones with permanent bags under their eyes keeping our IT systems going.

A brief interlude to harass the very busy packaging area to see if our next shipment of the amazing books by Yuri Grishin have arrived then back to your desk to see what goodies you will be dealing with today.

It's frantic, it's busy, it's fun. We do it because we want to.

Hopefully in all of this, we manage to find that missing item for your collection.

Keep checking the Latest Arrivals page as that's where the fruits of our labours will scroll before you.

Til next time ...

Speaking of Nuts ...
On this day in 1931 Al Capone's gangster career ended when he was sentenced to 11 years for tax evasion. He was released in 1939 and died in 1947.

And if you want to be really sad :

On this day in 1648 The Treaty Of Westphalia was signed ending the Thirty Years War!!

Good things come to those who wait.......

Good Evening World!!

Before I head off to yet another gig, I thought I'd better give you all a much over-due update.

There's a lot to get through so I'll start by highlight the following bunch of fantastic new titles:

SIGUR ROS Heima
In 2006, having toured the world over in support of their 'Takk' album, Sigur Ros returned home to play a series of free, unannounced concerts in Iceland. 'Heima' is a unique record of that tour filmed in over 13 different locations across the island, taking in the biggest and smallest shows of the band's career.
Directed by the Oscar nominated Dean DeBlois, 'Heima' is premiered in London in October at the BBC Electric Proms alongside an exclusive live acoustic performance from the band.
The special edition version of 'Heima' includes a beautifully presented 116 page [approx] photo book documenting the tour, encased in a special top-opening slipcase.
The standard edition features the same audio-visual content as the special edition, but in a 4 panel digi-pack with an eight page booklet, in a side-opening slipcase.
Aside from the 97 minute feature film, both DVDs have a bonus disc featuring over two hours of full length performances including music from all four of the band's albums, featuring alternate edits to those that appear in the film, plus a brand new song ('Heima') recorded live in the band's own studio and several 'featurettes'.

CLICK HERE for more details...SPICE GIRLS Greatest Hits
After much speculation and rumour the Spice Girls announced their reunion tour and Greatest Hits album to the world's media this summer.
Fifty five million records sold, an astonishing 9 UK no. 1 singles, three back-to-back Christmas no. 1 singles and with 'Wannabe' the biggest selling single ever by an all female group, the Spice Girls have very little to prove.

Unintended new mistake leads to absolution

In the course of
clearing up a rather large number of stray boxes I have this week re-discovered
a number of items I thought we'd long since sold out of. It always surprises me
how easily things get forgotten once they become hidden inside their cardboard
prisons. Much to the amusement of some of my colleagues my natural hoarding
instinct has proved to be of great benefit more often than not (just don't
mention those 2000 Jellyfish singles, eh!). To illustrate my point here are two
great examples - Muse's Absolution double vinyl LP, factory sealed from new
& hence unplayed, mint condition, and a box of Unintended clear vinyl 7"s -
my fellow buyers say that to have forgotten such rarities is
disorganised neglect, but I say it's astute foresight to bury your nuts for
winter!

Still Got The Blues...

Last night I had the privilege of seeing two fantastic blues guitarists. The headliner was someone I've seen on many occasions, Walter Trout. Walter who? Yes that's the reaction I'm used to. Well if you like searing guitar solos in the vein of Stevie Ray Vaughan check his albums out. I can personally recommend Tellin Stories, Relentless and Go The Distance as my personal favourites, though his most current album, Hardcore, is just that! The big surprise of the night though was an up and coming youngster by the name of Oli Brown, a 17 or 18 year old who's sound is very similar to the first Jonny Lang album Lie To Me. This was a treat for me as the Lie To Me CD is in my top ten blues albums of all time. I think this kid has a big career ahead of him and I shall be buying his first album as soon as he's finished recording it.

The art of music

One of my favesYesterday I had the
day off and met up in London with a photographer friend to visit The Art of Lee
Miller
exhibition at the V&A museum. To quote their own introduction, "Lee
Miller (1907 - 1977) is one of the most remarkable female icons of the 20th
century - an individual admired as much for her free-spirit, creativity and
intelligence as for her classical beauty. Charting her transformation from muse
to ground-breaking artist, this centenary exhibition provides a unique
exploration of her life and unprecedented career as a photographer."
If you're
in any way interested in black & white photography this exhibition is
essential viewing. Images from the 1929-1932 Surrealist Paris section were a
particular highlight, although quite what she would have made of some of the
items available in the gift shop I have no idea.....branded jars of Lee Miller
apple jelly certainly seemed surreal to me! To bring this post back to the
subject of music my photographer friend has, over the years, worked with
luminaries such as Fin Costello, Andy Earl and Max Vadukul, all of whom have
been instrumental in creating some of the iconic album covers of the past few
decades. Full size, 12" x 12" high quality album covers are to me an essential
element of the whole music package, whether abstract designs from Factory's
Peter Saville, the glam excess of 80's new romantics fashion or the traditional
group portrait they all add an extra sensory dimension to the music. I'm afraid
a Jpeg or mini screen graphic will never quite have the same effect as the full
glory of a proper album cover. Discuss...

Stuck for something to listen to?
Ever wondered what we listen to whilst sorting, pricing and researching? Well here in the darkened basement of Hollywood House there are currently four people with wildly different ideas about what constitutes a good album or band so the music we listen to is quite eclectic and sometimes very challenging depending on who gets to the CD player first. Recently I picked up a massive 2000 piece vinyl collection so we've been working our way through THIS, a very debatable list of 1001 albums you should hear before you die. Everyone here in the office has their own favourites and we all question some of the inclusions and ask ourselves why other albums have been overlooked completely, but I guess like all these other books that contain 'definitive lists', there are someone else opinion. I struggle to understand why I need to hear 3 Bruce Springsteen or Crosby, Stills and Nash albums when they all sound the same to me!

Christmas Gift Ideas
OK.
Fed up with all those 'normal' tunes ? Fancy something a bit sticky bun ?

Sadly, the Ginger Geezer is no longer with us, but the legacy of the man & his chums lives on [as do a great deal of the chums too].

I'm not even going to tell you what you should be rushing out to buy TODAY, as that is coercion & that is naughty.

Suffice to say that the good people at EMI have released special 2007 remasters of five of the finest albums ever released and, having now listened to two of the five, they are wonderful.

If you haven't got these albums you deserve to be swung by your toes over a pit of mating porcupines.

So there !

Live Tori, anyone ?
Looks like those of you attending the US leg of the World Tour are in for a treat.
Toriamos.com is making available a series of complete shows for download in either lossy MP3 or (here's the good news) lossless FLAC format.

About time more people started doing this. I think that bands are now realising that far from 'killing music', this kind of thing is superb promotion and actually results in more sales rather than less.

Fripp & Crimson have been doing this for a while now & several other bands (The Who, The Stones) have also wised up.

So, once you've pulled down the live show of your choice HERE, you can visit our Collectors Store to pick up the bits of the back catalogue that you're missing - Win-Win !

Julian et Steve en Paris.....
On Friday myself and Julian set out at stupid o clock in the morning for a brief jaunt to Paris to see a regular supplier and attend the record fair. The long journey was spent discussing how cheap you could actually buy a Ferrari for and the usual inane musical chatter. We also discussed our hopes for the trip including our anticipation of tucking into the much loved freshly made 'Jambon Baguettes' which are usually on sale at the fair.
Unfortunately the record fair was more than a little disappointing, the items we looked at were either far too expensive or not up to our strict condition requirements, so unwilling to compromise our standards we left empty handed - even the legendary Jambon Baguettes were absent, having been replaced by prepacked soggy sandwiches!

Luckily an independant dealer saved the day and made the trip worthwhile. We purchased some cool items including a French Kinks LP,  Village Green Preservation Society in a unique sleeve plus early Smiths posters, a Sordid Sentimental 7" by Throbbing Gristle and a rare French Hendrix LP. As usual check the latest arrivals as these items will be appearing on the site over the next couple of days.
