Joy Division began as Warsaw, formed by Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook, later joined by Stephen Morris after original drummer Steve Brotherdale left following the band's earliest demo sessions. This record documents that pre-fame chapter: eleven tracks recorded in May 1978 for an album backed by two promoters intent on securing the band a deal with RCA, including early versions of "Shadowplay," "Transmission" and "Interzone," the latter built on the backing track of "Keep On Keepin' On" with the band's own lyrics added over it, "Transmission" written during the band's final week of rehearsals. During mixing, one of the promoters added synthesizer, hoping to give the band a more polished sound than their punk contemporaries, but Joy Division rejected the mix outright, wanting only guitar and drums, and the recordings were shelved rather than released under the Warsaw name. Written in the months following 2024's The Mighty Several and, as with much of Paul Heaton's recentwork, largely finished during cycling breaks in a village north of Amsterdam, Jenius was recorded at Manchester's Blueprint Studios in early 2026, right as his ten-year marriage was ending. None of that turmoil surfaces directly in thesongs themselves, which Heaton had alreadybegun before the split, but he's said the sessions became a genuine refuge, a chance to be around friends and bandmates rather than dwell on what was happening at home. Richard and KarenCarpenter signed to A&M Records in April 1969 after label co-founder Herb Alpert heard their demo tape, delivering their first hit seven months later with a stripped-down, ballad reworking of the Beatles' "Ticket to Ride." Their genuine breakthrough came the following year, when Alpert handed Richard a Burt Bacharach and Hal David song that had sat unused for years: "(They Long to Be) Close to You." Neither sibling was especially keen on the song at first, and Richard reportedly told the label that if the record didn't become a hit, it would be the biggest stiff A&M had ever released. It went to number one instead, staying there for four weeks and winning the pair a Grammy.

That single opened a run that would define the decade: "We've Only Just Begun," "Superstar," "Rainy Days and Mondays," "Top of the World" and "Yesterday Once More" among them, all shaped by Richard's arrangements and Karen's voice.
