The eighth Supertramp studio album and their first without founding member Roger Hodgson, whose departure left Rick Davies as sole songwriter and vocalist. Recorded in 1985, Brother Where You Bound is a notably ambitious record - one that re-embraces the band's progressive rock roots while sharpening their pop instincts. The sixteen-and-a-half-minute title track features David Gilmour of Pink Floyd on guitar solos and Scott Gorham of Thin Lizzy on rhythm guitar, alongside readings from George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. 'Better Days' incorporates an extended fade-out featuring voice-overs from the four key figures of the 1984 US presidential campaign across left and right audio channels, underpinned by John Helliwell's extended saxophone solo. The album reached number 20 on the UK Albums Chart and number 21 on the Billboard 200, going Gold in 1985. SUPERTRAMP Free As A Bird (2026 UK/EU 9-track LP pressed on 180-gram heavyweight black vinyl, Half Speed Mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. The ninth and final Supertramp studio album of new material for A&M Records, originally released in October 1987. A deliberate change of direction, Free as a Bird stepped back from the progressive rock sound of its predecessor in favour of synthesised dance beats, drum machines and a more modular recording approach. Chief songwriter Rick Davies later reflected that the machine-led method caused the band to "lose the band spirit a little bit", though acknowledged it contained "some interesting songs." The album marked the first Supertramp recordings to feature guitarist and vocalist Mark Hart, who would later become a full member, alongside trumpet player Lee Thornburg. Club chart-topper 'I'm Beggin' You' was the set's commercial highlight. The group disbanded following the subsequent tour and did not reconvene until 1997. MILES DAVIS Doo-Bop (2026 UK/EU 9-track LP pressed on Black Vinyl, the first-ever vinyl reissue of the final studio album from Miles Davis, recorded in early 1991 and released posthumously in the summer of 1992. As he had done throughout his career - from bebop to cool jazz, from hard bop to jazz fusion - Davis once again moved towards the music of the moment, this time embracing hip-hop at the suggestion of Russell Simmons. Working with producer Easy Mo Bee, who hadalready collaborated with Big Daddy Kane and would later produce Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die, Davis recorded six completed pieces in a single month before his declining health and eventual passing in September 1991. Easy Mo Bee completed the album, building and sampling around those recordings and contributing vocals to three of the nine final tracks. The resulting sound draws on R&B, funk, new jack swing and acid jazz, with Davis's muted trumpet providing sharp, adventurous lines over Easy Mo Bee's contemporary production. The album's sampling palette ranges widely - James Brown, Donald Byrd, KC and the Sunshine Band, Slick Rick and even the theme from The Andy Griffith Show all appear. Doo-Bop predated Guru's Jazzmatazz as one of the earliest direct collaborations between a hip-hop artist and a jazz musician - polarising on release, it went on to win the 1993 Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.
