Compiled from singles recorded between 1956 and 1965, The Real Folk Blues is one of the key Howlin' Wolf Chess albums: a concentrated run of Chicago electric blues built around that voice, the snap and menace of Hubert Sumlin's guitar, and a studio band that could make every cut feel raw, direct and dangerous. The title may have been shaped by Chess Records' mid-'60s push to reconnect blues with the folk audience, but the sound here is pure urban voltage. The set carries some of Wolf's most enduring recordings, including "Killing Floor", "Tail Dragger", "Built For Comfort" and "Three Hundred Pounds Of Joy" - sides that became foundational material for blues and rock players alike, even if the original singles never crossed over into the Billboard R&B charts. Originally released in 1966 by Chess Records during the 1960s folk revival, The Real Folk Blues reframed Muddy Waters' early Chicago recordings for a younger audience tracing the roots of American music. The title may have leaned into the folk-blues market ofthe day, but the performances need no repositioning: this is Muddy Waters as a primary source, carrying Delta authority into the electric blues era with economy, force and absolute conviction. The set includes "Mannish Boy", one of the defining postwar blues recordings, built on its instantly recognisable riff and call-and-response vocal. Elsewhere, "Screamin' & Crying" and "Just To Be With You" cut deep into tension and longing, while "Walking Blues" reaches directly back into the Delta lineage that shaped Waters' language. MCCOY TYNER Inception (Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 2026 limited edition LP mastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab from the original analog tape, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio across January 10-11, 1962, Inception marked Tyner's debut as a leader for Impulse! Records. Working in trio format with bassist Art Davis and drummer Elvin Jones, the album captures Tyner stepping out from the John Coltrane orbit with a clear identity already in place: bold left-hand architecture, ringing modal colour, rhythmic pressure and a commanding sense of space. The six-track programme balances four Tyner originals - "Inception", "Sunset", "Effendi" and "Blues For Gwen" - with readings of "There Is No Greater Love" and "Speak Low". Davis brings weight and definition to the low end, while Jones' drumming adds fire, elasticity and lift, giving the session a directness that still feels fresh more than six decades later.
