In 1956, Miles Davis had just signed a career-defining deal with Columbia, but remained contractually bound to Prestige for several more albums first. Rather than delay the move, he booked two single-day marathon sessions at Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack studio, on 11 May and 26 October, and simply played through the quintet's livebook from top to bottom, almost entirely first takes, with the band effectively performing as though on stage. Those two days alone produced 26 tracks, enough material for four full albums: Cookin', Relaxin', Workin' and Steamin', all now considered cornerstones of hard bop. Cookin' was the first of the four to reach shelves, and its title came directly from Davis himself, who later summed the session up simply: "After all, that's what we did, came in and cooked." The record captures Davis alongside John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones at the exact moment their chemistry as a working band was fully locked in. Recorded in 1957 and originally released on Prestige, the same year he was dismissed from Miles Davis's band over heroin use and subsequently got clean, Coltrane captures the saxophonist stepping out as a bandleader in his own right for the first time on record, backed by Johnnie Splawn, Sahib Shihab, Red Garland, Mal Waldron, Paul Chambers andAlbert "Tootie" Heath. Presented here in its original mono mix, the album sits at a genuine turning point in Coltrane's career, arriving in the same year that also produced Blue Train, the record widely credited with launching his ascent toward becoming one of jazz's most significant voices.
