Mark Hollis and producer Tim Friese-Greene spent the first four months of 1985 writing before the restof Talk Talk joined them in the studio, working twelve-hour days, six days a week, for a session that stretched to a full year and two days, drawing on a cast of around 60 musicians. Hollis banned synthesizers outright, bringing in Steve Winwood on organ, Pretenders guitarist Robbie McIntosh, Pentangle bassist Danny Thompson and Average White Band's Alan Gorrie instead. He's said he was listening obsessively to Bartók's string quartets during the sessions, recalling: "I'd never imagined something so beautiful existed... Bartók has an impact on the arrangements on The Colour of Spring." The album became Talk Talk's biggest commercial success, reaching number eight on the UK Albums Chart, driven by singles "Life's What You Make It" and "Living in Another World," and is widely seen as the record that set the band on course toward Spirit of Eden. MILES DAVIS Tutu (MD100 Centennial Edition 2026 UK/EU 8-track Picture Disc LP. Miles Davis's first album for Warner Bros. very nearly carried a different title entirely, Perfect Way, after his cover of the Scritti Polittisong, before producer Tommy LiPuma pushed for something shorter, taking the name from the track written in tribute to Archbishop Desmond Tutu instead. Marcus Miller wrote and produced nearly the entire record, folding Davis's trumpet into a distinctly mid-'80s framework of synthesizers, sequencers and drum programming, a genuine departure that split critics on release but has grown into one of the most influential entries in Davis's later catalogue. The cover itself became just as celebrated as the music: Irving Penn's stark black-and-white portrait of Davis, art directed by Eiko Ishioka, won the 1987 Grammy for Best Album Package.
