4.A.D. / VAUGHAN OLIVER This Rimy River (Amazing 2004 UK
Limited Special Edition Los Angeles exhibition catalogue for the work
of Vaughn Oliver held in 1994. This fantastic folio is 12½" x 16", bound
in PLEXIGLASS & then housed in an outervelvet picture
slipcase. The whole edition is crafted to the very highest standards of
manufacture & is stictly limited to 400 copies only - a mini
masterpiece!) Vaughan Oliver is one of the
most powerful and explosive graphic designers of our time. His work
with v23 & 4AD is legendary. This Rimy River is a
catalog of an exhibition held at the Pacific Design Center in Los
Angeles in 1994. Long out of print, it has been sought after by
designers and collectors who have followed the work of v23. Most
admired for his collaborative energy and imagination, Oliver set the
stage for a graphic revolution in the eighties and nineties. His impact
was left on the post-punk music industry and influenced a generation
of designers exploring the possibilities of type and print.
Limited to just 400 copies, this superb special edition
of the Los Angeles exhibition catalogue uses the regular edition as its
starting point but incorporates massive changes to create an individual
piece. The original page artwork has been
overprinted with two new layers :- The first layer, in black, uses
enlarged details of archive artwork which nearly totally obscures the
existing illustrations and text. This in turn is then overlaid with one
large word per page, running bottom to top, in a translucent bronze
ink. The words are an extract from Victoria Mitchell's
poem "Dearest Vaya con Dios Darling", which inspired the exhibition's
title "This Rimy River". The result is more painting than book.
Another piece of fantastic artwork to add to his
already impressive portfolio. The whole item is finished with end
papers that incorporate snapshots of the L.A. show, bound in a
patterned plexiglass hardcover and housed in a luxurious velvet outer
slipcase box. A fantastic item which is number 237 of
400.
