180-gram vinyl. <I>The Big Beat</I> is one of the defining Blue Note
statements of the early 1960s, pairing Blakey's forceful, propulsive
drumming with a Jazz Messengers line-up of exceptional depth: Lee
Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt. The album
balances hard bop drive with strong melodic writing, and it is
particularly noted for its reading of Bobby Timmons' "Dat Dere", a
performance that became one of the record's best-known moments.
Mastered all-analogue by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes
and manufactured at Optimal in Germany. It is a clean, high-quality
presentation of a session that remains central to the Blakey catalogue.
