<I>Fourth Drawer Down</I> is the Associates' 1981
compilation that gathers together the A- and B-sides from the
six singles they released during that year, and highlights the
group's darker, more experimental direction as they moved
beyond the sharper pop contours of <I>The Affectionate
Punch</I>. The material reveals Billy Mackenzie and Alan
Rankine pushing further into stark atmospheres, oblique
lyricism and electronic textures. Tracks such as "White Car In
Germany" and "Message Oblique Speech" underline the
band's growing confidence in mood and abstraction, while
retaining the melodic tension that defined their early work.
The compilation was well received on release, with critics
noting the deepening sense of mystery and commitment to
sonic experimentation. This special edition is housed in a
gatefold picture sleeve with each copy individually silver-foil
numbered and strictly <B>limited to just 750 copies</B>, with
