Davy Graham Folk, Blues & Beyond... - 1st - VG UK vinyl LP album (LP record)
|
Tracklisting / Additional Info: |
Packed with sixteen tracks of pure genius, each of the mono recordings put a new peg down for the Acoustic guitar player. With influences ranging from his Scottish Gaelic & Carribean heritage, his extensive Mediterranean travels taking in Indian and Arabic forms into his own blend of traditional, Jazz & blues, Davy was a one-off from the start. His classic 'Anji' had already become a rite of passage for the aspiring Folkie, but this 1964 album continued with tracks such as 'Sally Free And Easy', 'Black Is The Colour Of My True Loves Hair' & 'Maajun', which were to be adopted and adapted by the likes of Bert Jansch, Donovan & Jimmy Page. Equally at home dispensing traditional blues, folk or Jazz, Davy was a pioneer, the likes of which had never been seen before on these shores, now considered as one of the greatest influences on UK Acoustic players, if not the greatest.
The title of the album was no empty boast.
Condition:
The sleeve is the typical front laminated type of the period. There are the usual small creases at the spine with all text remaining clearly visible. The sleeve notes on the back are by Producer Ray Horricks & the album was engineered by Gus Dudgeon. There is a degree of age yellowing to the unlaminated back and a small section of the spine that appears to have been chewed by a long since dead pet. Not great, but not disasterous.
The labels are the red 'deep groove' unboxed Decca monos as you would expect. There are several instances of spindle marks around the centre hole indicating a degree of play, which is exactly what should happen with this album.
The vinyl itself has retained its sheen & shows just a few light surface scuffs on very close inspection but nothing material that affects play There is a degree of background noise evident in quiet passages and between tracks, but these are soon filtered out by the ears as the audio is still clear and true, with no distortion of burring evident. If your amp has a mono setting, it would be advised to set this from the off as this places the background noise well and truly in the background instead of sitting on the edge of a stereo image that isn't there. These albums were pressed for wider, more round than elliptical styli, so can actually sound better on a dedicated mono setup, although this still remains mighty fine on a modern stereo rig.
No point saying 'first press' or 'A-1/B-1' matrices as they all were. This was it. It didn't sell in huge numbers at the time and its relative importance in history has only really happened in the years since when so many guitarists were asked over the years 'Who were you most influenced by ?' 'Davy Graham'.
Not mint, no, but still very playable and enjoyable, looking very much the part of the fifty eight year old landmark recording it is. Satisfaction guaranteed and yours for a very advantageous price !
