History
The 'Loud Cut' issue (Matrices ending -1) had a slightly different studio mix to the more familiar version. This was withdrawn after a very brief pressing run & the mix was changed & the stampers re-pressed to have a matrix ending in -4. It's not really 'louder' but the mix itself has the tonal qualities of louder music with some bass enhancement & a slightly thinner, edgier vocal balance as a consequence of having a little too much compression applied at the mastering stage. This, given the pressure on the factories at the time, was not a smooth transition & copies do exist with the 'loud cut' -1 matrix on side one & the re-mixed -4 matrix on side two. Also copies exist with 'normal' side one & 'loud cut' side two. This copy is one of the very first pressed with the -1 matrices on both sides. By the end of 1965, all of the presses had the -4 matrices. This really is one hell of a copy that you would have been hard pushed to find in this good condition at the time, let alone nearly fifty-seven years later.
Condition:
The vinyl:
The vinyl grades Excellent with just a few whispy hairlines not affecting play, no spindle wear, and the KT tax code clearly visible. However, please note although the record has evidently seen very little play there is a small mark/scratch on Norwegian Wood. Playtesting reveals a few faint clicks for several rotations although nothing excessive/obtrusive.
The sleeve:
This copy of the rare 'loud cut' variant is housed in the very rare Ernest J. Day sleeve (although both Garrod & Lofthouse and Ernest J. Day shared production duties for most Beatles releases, we have never seen a Rubber Soul 'loud cut' in an Ernest J. Day sleeve). The sleeve is in Mint condition, super clean and still retaining a wonderfully bright high-gloss laminate fifty-seven years on, no laminate rippling and sharp corners and spine. The 6512 code on the bottom flip-back confirming its release date in the UK (December '65).
The inner: Crisp and clean original Emitext inner.
