The Beatles Yesterday And Today - 1st - Sealed US vinyl LP album (LP record)

Tracklisting / Additional Info: |
This album marked a few firsts - and also a last for Capitol.
It was the first Beatles album to be recalled for the original sleeve design to be pasted over with a less controversial one. The original issues being issued with what became known as the 'Butcher' cover, depicting the band sitting in Butcher's smocks with disembodied dolls & pieces of meat draped over them. This was too much for the American sensibility at the time and, although large quantities of the offending cover were already manufactured, they were immediately recalled with only a few advance copies being sent out and some stores having them on sale for just one day. These were pasted over with a less offensive design featuring the band and a trunk - not surprisingly referred to as the 'Trunk' cover. It was also the last time Capitol created a US-only issue of a Beatles album from existing tracks. Yesterday & Today featuring leftover tracks from Help! & Rubber Soul, plus the current Day Tripper single along with unique mixes of I'm Only Sleeping, And Your Bird Can Sing & Dr. Robert that were consequently left off of the soon to follow US issue of Revolver. From Sgt Pepper onwards, the US & UK releases were identical in format although, certainly with the White Album & Abbey Road, they were remastered for ease of pressing resulting in a severe EQ-ing that considerably reduced bass & treble response. Luckily the rest of the world's pressing plants were able to cope with the album dynamics without the need for EQ & compression.
This copy is one of the first issues with the natural 'Trunk' cover, not pasted over the 'Butcher' picture, so technically a second issue. The back of the sleeve has a number '4' in the bottom right corner, indicating a Jacksonville pressing. Incidentally, true Jacksonville 'Butcher' covers are the rarest to find as the plant manager sent all the returns to be destroyed, rather than pasted over like they did at the LA (5,6) & Scranton (2,3) plants. Jacksonville did, however, recieve an allotment of paste over covers but they are distinguished by having Scranton or LA numbers on the back with the Jacksonville pressed disc.
This copy is still magnificent, white & unfaded in the original tight shrinkwrap, jsut as it would have been all those years ago. A stunning copy!
