This was The Beatles' ninth official album release. The album sold a quarter of a million copies in Britain in it's first week of release and by the end of June had topped 500,000 sales. But, surprisingly, it didn't sell it's One Millionth copy until April 1973, some 6 years later! It is still in the Top 10 albums of all time worldwide & is THE top selling album in the UK ever. It went straight to number one and dominated the top slot for the next 23 weeks.
The record is the first Beatles LP not to be banded into individual tracks, with hardly any gap between songs. It was also the first to use recording in the run-out groove.
The Beatles insisted that the album be issued identically worldwide, so for the first time Capitol in America fell into line and didn't split tracks over different LPs.
This copy remains in perfect mint condition as it is still sealed in the original factory shrink wrap.
The sleeve design is front pasted with the classic Peter Blake artwork. Still, as he got £200 for doing it, it had to be good. The usual budget for a record cover photograph in the sixties was £25 or as much as £75 for an act as big as The Beatles. Copyright and retouching fees came to nearly £1,400 alone & Michael Cooper's photographic fees came to £1,500 (which included Peter Blake's £200). The back of the sleeve has the album lyrics.
Apart from a parting of the shrinkwrap at the centre 5" of the opening, all edges and corners are completely sealed. There are two tiny breather holes on the front and two on the reverse of the sleeve. The print on the spine is clearly legible.
The second track is listed as 'A Little Help From My Friends' on the reverse.
No mention of MACLEN MUSIC INC or Nems in bottom right hand corner on reverse of sleeve.
'MANUFACTURED BY CAPITOL RECORD, INC. HOLLYWOOD AND VINE STREETS, HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. FACTORIES SCRANTON, PA., LOS ANGELES, CALIF., JACKSONVILLE, ILL.'
printed in bottom right hand corner on reverse of sleeve, in small but clear bold lettering.
Inside will be the Rainbow rim Capitol LP along with the sheet of cutouts.
The sleeve colours are still bright, sharp & unfaded.
A staggering example of this classic album - a true investment grade item!
