Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival on 3 July 1960, this album captures Muddy Waters backed by Pat Hare on guitar, Andrew Stevens on bass, Francis Clay on drums, James Cotton on harmonica and Otis Spann on piano, a lineup whose interplay carries three songs now considered cornerstones of the blues canon: "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man," "Baby, Please Don't Go" and "Got My Mojo Working." Waters had recorded his first song for ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax in 1941 before joining the wave of Black Americans leaving the South for the industrial North two years later, a journey that fed directly into the electric blues sound he brings to full force here.
