PRINCE Purple Rain Avant de Dormir Promotional Bag (Highly unusual vintage 1984
surrealistic transparent PVC shopping bag [with an additional PVC inner
lining]. Between the two transparent walls is a plastic & fabric purple
rose along with a small open envelope, a notecard which reads "I Love
You, Prince" and a purple vinyl 'Purple Rain' LP record, the bottom third
of which has been cut off, to make it sit properly in the
bag.
This bag was specially designed by the Milanese
creative duo, Avant de Dormir, and is based on several other bags in a
series that began in 1984. Their bags were acclaimed by the fashion
press, and orders flooded in from all the major cities in the US. This
'Prince' variation is believed to be one of only ten in existence, created
for senior WEA executives to celebrate the release of Prince's Purple
Rain album in 1984. The world famous V&A Museum has fully
documented one held in their collection, gifted to them by Moira Bellas
of WEA Records.
This amazing collectable remains intact
and complete, with only minor discolouration to the PVC, which is
inevitable after 36 years. A truly extraordinary rarity which we are
pleased to offer for sale for the first time…!

A quote from da Materie Plastiche in 1984 described the work of Avant de Dormir as such:
"Putting a perfectly imitated fish in a transparent bag and taking it for a walk is like putting a moustache on the Mona Lisa, as had been done by the Surrealists. It's ignoring the rules of the established game, it's being ironic. The demystification of the material, of fashion, the satire of consumerism through a new consumerism is brought forward by the two designers who use dissonance and other clearly surrealistic effects."
