SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES Hong Kong Garden (Super rare
1978 vintage original UK promotional silk-screened poster [measuring
31" x 26"], for their debut single release on 18th August 1978, by
Polydor Records. Hong Kong Garden was one of the most important of
the early British Post-Punk hits, reaching number seven on the UK
Singles Chart. According to Polydor Art Director Jill Mumford this
original silk-screened poster is one of just 15 believed produced - this
copy has benefitted from sympathetic professional restoration and
preservation, being lined onto acid-free Japanese paper, a conservation
method that restores and flattens worn folds and edge creases,
preserving the delicate paper and stabilising the vulnerable edges,
protecting them from further dints and damage. This stunning original
has had significant investment already spent in order to preserve it and
is now ready for conservation framing and display - Remarkable!).

The following extract is from former Polydor Art Director Jill Mumford's web site:
"1978. The home made silk-screened poster was a small run, we think about 15, to promote the new single.
Phillip Sheffield is the silk-screen artist. The single Hong Kong Garden was their first release at Polydor Records where I worked as an Art Director. I designed the sleeve with the band.
My Hornsey Art college tutor Sid Day did the wonderful calligraphy lettering.
The Banshees brought in the image of Rose Lemoine, the 'Gibson Girl' from the Charles Addam's book 'Dear Dead Days'.
I also worked as Art Director on the album 'The Scream' with the Banshees and their manager Nils."

A note on conservation and preservation techniques:
We use the skilled services of a highly respected conservation studio whose client portfolio includes The Royal Academy of Arts, Victoria & Albert Museum, numerous libraries, institutions and archives. Their work is of the highest standard and we would be pleased to recommend them upon request.
Conservation is divided into three areas. Conservation The majority of work done in the studio involves direct intervention where they carry out an initial assessment of an item to decide an appropriate method of repair. With archives this might involve lining with spider tissue, local repairs, infilling missing areas with toned repairs, and carrying out binding work that keeps as much of the original as possible with the aim of stabilising its condition and retarding further deterioration. Each area of work involves an initial assessment of the condition and an agreement with the client as to how far they should proceed.
Preservation This relates to a number of areas within the studio and where they offer a range of services. Through the initial consultancy service they offer, condition surveys, cost analysis and examination of the archive environment to give an overview of how to improve the preservation of the archives, books, documents or pictures. They can give recommendations on storage and display, sometimes recommending the making of facsimiles as an alternative to displaying the original, as happened with All Hallows by the Tower, making two facsimile volumes for their display, as the cabinets were not environmentally controlled and would have been harmful to the originals. The studio can also organise book refurbishing and archive cleaning programmes where they address the storage methods and boxing of cleaned books and documents.
Restoration Restoration is an extension of conservation in that they carry out the same repair work but spend more time on disguising as much as possible the repair work to any given item. More time is spent in toning papers exactly and retouching. This is more common with the lining and retouching of posters, prints, drawings, and watercolours for collectors or dealers.
Posters The studio carries out a large number of commissions for museums, poster dealers and collectors. For museum work most posters are lined on Japanese tissue whereas with collectors and dealers of film and advertising posters linen and paper is used with toned repairs and retouching where necessary. All methods used are completely reversible and good quality acid-free papers are used for all work. Space is available in the studio to line and repair very large posters.
