The Sleeve
There is just a little ringwear related fading to the front image at the top and bottom of the front, but due to the 'worn' nature of the artwork is not immediately noticeable and does little to detract from the image. There is a small area of paper loss to the bottom right corner, however this is in the frame section of the art and again has only light impact on the image itself. The centre of the gatefold is still clean and the psychedelic colours really stand out after all these years to give a great effect. The reverse of the sleeve again shows just a little light ringwear, althought nothing severe enought to take away from the design. There is a 2" seam split to bottom and a small area of paper loss in the top right corner, probably due to price sticker removal. The spine is free from splits or major scuffs, and although slightly faded, the title & record company name are still legible. All in all a great example of a sleeve, graded as VG, which due to its matt nature, is all too often found in a wrecked state.
The Vinyl
The vinyl has been professionally cleaned and playtested. There is a shallow warp to the record which no discernable impact on play. There is a name annotation to one label, which is relatively unobtrusive and spindle wear indicate that there has been moderate playback, but nothing excessive and there is no real sign of paper loss around the hole. The vinyl shows light paper scuffs and hairlines here or there and still retains a satisfying deep sheen. Playback confirms ambient noise between the tracks, whilst background noise is minimal or low during the actual tracks. All in all the vinyl is graded VG/VG+. A great copy when one considers what most original copies probably suffered through.
The bass certainly seems to have more punch than the CD remasters, probably because this is certainly from the original master tape, the rarest pressing of the rarest Hawkwind album - Essential!
