Widely regarded as the rarest of all The Cure's promotional 45s, including the legendary 'The Blood' single, this obscure record rarely appears for sale. It was issued in 1980 as part of an exclusive promotional-only box set entitled 'On The Wave'. The box contained six singles, each one by a different UK artist; Protex, The Cure, The Invaders, The Akrylykx, Heroes and New Adventures. The complete box is now virtually impossible to find.
This 'Boys Don't Cry' single is housed in a unique textured black and white picture sleeve. It has a similar title arrangement to the regular UK 'soldier' sleeve. Inset towards the centre of the sleeve is a black and white image of the Three Imaginary Boys album cover art. The back cover is mostly covered with a brief Spanish language biography, along with the 'Ejemplar Gratuito Prohibida Su Venta' promotional wording and the usual label credits and catalogue number.
Being white, and textured, the sleeve deteriorates easily and on the rare occasion you do see them they are usually in very poor shape. This rare example appears Very Good. The internal flipbacks are at full strength but due to its thin paper manufacture there are a few hairline splits around the edges. The sleeve is fully intact & shows just a little ring wear otherwise & a mild patch of discolouring from past tape reinforcement to one corner. There is no writing & all text is clearly legible. Also, we consider these blemishes fairly minor when put into the context of finding any Spanish record of this vintage, especially one with a white cover.
The large centred labels are near mint. Also white, with simple black printed text, there are no blemishes. The top of the label bears the title 'on the wave' in oversized lower case letters; the regular Polydor and Fiction Records logos are printed beneath.
The vinyl shows some weathering & a cosmetic reaction both sides, having been previously stored in a plastic pvc sleeve. The disc's VG grade is based on its cosmetic look. We have play tested both sides & the disc plays through without any fault.
By no means mint, this remains an outstanding rarity and would be a wonderful item to add to any Cure collection.
