J.R. MONTEROSE J.R. Condition :-

What better place to start than with the cover. These early designs have never been bettered & feature the joint facsimile signatures of Blue Note designer Reid Miles & photographer Francis Wolff top right as part of the layout.
Obtained from the prize collection of one very keen Jazz fan, with all records bought from new back in the day, this is the first time we have obtained this extreme rarity.
The matt card has some very mild discolouring to both panels but nothing untoward. There is a small catalogue/price annotation on the back, unobtrusive to the print & some light scuffing to the paper around the edges but no actual seam splits. Remarkable condition, considering its US & sixty years of age. We would grade the cover Very Good.

The heavyweight vinyl has flat edges & clearly reveals the 'RVG' [Rudy Van Gelder] as a pre-stamper etching in the run-offs both sides. In addition to the 'ear' etchings & catalogue/matrix details, there is a 'deep groove' present both sides of the label & no 'r' in the 'Blue Note' label lettering, indicating a pre-trademark pressing. This is from the early [& highly collectable] days of the label, back when Blue Note was a shoe-string operation from one company office led by Alfred Lion - the earliest & the best for audiophile Blue Note collectors.
The labels reveal some spindle marks by the centre hole to indicate past action on the turntable, with no blemishes to upset the print & no import stickers.

The vinyl has received a deep cleanse on a top of the range Matrix machine. We have play tested both sides & boy does it sound HUGE. Many subsequent pressings of this album in the original mono tended to sound thin. This is a class example of Rudy Van Gelder technology & an outstanding performance that immediately lets you know why it's so in demand.

The vinyl appears super clean. The small blemishes of note actually live inside the wax, i.e. this is how it was pressed in 1956 - there are a couple of tiny miniscule 'bubbles' in the odd area or two. Upon playtesting, the only hiccup we heard is at the beginning of 'The Third' with just a couple of clicks on rotation [no jumps] before the magnificent rhythm kicks in; the track is so magical with inventive grooves that you completely forget about this little grievance. Using a medium weight cartridge, the whole album plays through beautifully with the bare minimum of surface apparent in the quieter sections, & side two sounding even more immense. On a mono setting, playback is simply glorious. We would grade the disc a lovely VG+ overall. Exceptionally rare - what a find!
