Obtained from the prize collection of one very keen Jazz fan, with all records bought from new back in the day, this is the first time we have obtained this Ted Curson title in any form.
Plenty Of Horn was released in two editions by the big apple label, Old Town, in 1961, a small run on blue vinyl with black & white labels & an equally limited amount on black vinyl with yellow, blue & black labels, the latter version which is found here. The label was an odd choice of home for this, Ted Curson's magnificent debut, especially with Eric Dolphy in the ranks, as high flying cutting edge Bop made its way on to Hyman & Sam Weiss' Old Town label, usually the home of classy R&B aimed at the charts, with little fanfare. Now a keen Jazz collectable, it might have taken us a while but here it is for sale...
Condition :-
The cover is a work of art in itself & due to its sturdy manufacture it remains in outstanding condition. There is some historic tape reinforcement at each corner from past ownership, & no splits. The rigid card has left no creasing whatsoever & both panels are beautifully clean with no tears or writing. The spine too is exceptional & all text is clearly readable. Fantastic
The deep groove labels reveal some minor spindle marks by the centre hole to show play. In the dead wax, the release date of '4-15-61' is inscribed as well as 'Bell Sound' & 'Audio Matrix' markers.
The black vinyl is clean & plays through beautifully. On close inspection, a couple of very faint paper scuffs are visible in the odd area but nothing that affects play. We are unlikely to ever find one of these again. If we had to grade this gem, overall we would say VG+++ As good as it gets, do not hesitate!
