Background:
For Bob Dylan, it had been quite a year. After his motorcycle accident prevented his hectic schedule of touring & recording continuing at the same pace as it had been, it was to be mostly a year of recuperation.
Once becoming fit again to work, he travelled to Nashville on October 17, 1967, to begin work on John Wesley Harding. In place of a large ensemble, the sessions featured just Charlie McCoy on bass, Pete Drake on pedal steel, Kenny Buttrey on drums and Dylan on guitar, piano and harmonica.
This was the last of Dylan's albums to be released in true Mono, rather than just a fold down from the Stereo mixes. The labels have the final mono design used by Columbia with "MONO" at bottom centre in white without the "360º SOUND"/arrows logos on either side. The album was released officially on 27th December 1967, but didn't actually arrive in stores until January 1968.
This copy has a 'Hi Fi Record' promotional sticker on the front and a small promo punch hole. This is how it would have been sent out sealed. There are no white title label copies. As a nice touch this copy still retains two vintage store stickers from way back in 1968 where it was being sold for the princely sum of $1.97!!!
Condition: The sleeve shows just a little light shelfwear without the serious ringwear that so often plagues US albums of this vintage. There is a little scuffing to edges and corners, but nothing excessive, the spine remaining clearly legible. The sleeve is still housed in an open shrink.
The labels are clear & bright, without spindle marks around the centre hole to indicate excessive play.
The vinyl does display a few surface hairlines on Side One, with Side Two also displaying a visible scuff/mark. However, with the solid mid sixties pressing, these hairlines are primarily cosmetic and have no affect on play. Although the record has obviously been played on both sides, it certainly hasn't be played to excess and has been played on good equipment. Sonically, it scores.
There is little more to tell you about this copy, although as a US Mono of this album it is particularly rare. There was little call for Mono LPs outside of AM Radio Stations by this time, with most of the general population of the United States having made the switch to Stereo years before. This is why this was the last Dylan album released in true Mono.
A very nice copy of this extremely hard to find US release !
