Upon its initial pressing (Nov. 18, 1971), alternate versions of Brown Sugar & Wild Horses were included on the Hot Rocks master plate. These versions first appeared in the brilliant 1970 documentary Gimme Shelter. Since there was no clear reference to their origin on the album cover, sleeve or label, one must look at the trail-off vinyl (the smooth 'dead wax' located nearest the disc label) & look for the word 'Shelley' & the date '11-18-71'.
The identifying mark is not easy to locate or read, but the mystery does not end if & when it is found. It seems that this "alternate pressing" was soon pulled in favor of a set which contained the single versions of Brown Sugar & Wild Horses. However, Shelley wasn't quite done, as the name reappeared for a short time afterwards with either a later date, or no date at all.
The songs themselves differ greatly from the known versions. Brown Sugar is a lot closer to the demo version heard in the hotel room sequence of the Gimme Shelter movie while Wild Horses has some noticeable vocal reverb.
The original Shelley 11-18-71, with the alternate takes, rarely surfaces & is among the top ten US collectables.
The labels are light blue & silver originals with boxed London logo & 'Stereophonic' text. The all important word 'Shelley' has been hand scratched on all four sides with the date 11-18-71 hand scratched into the run out groove on side four. Also present in the run out groove of side four is the XZAL11018 matrix number & 'STERLING' has been machine stamped.
In addition, this earliest version is never found complete. This is our first example in that respect. The pasted gatefold sleeve has the large custom hype/tracklist sticker intact & both colour catalogue inners are enclosed as well as the '211 reasons...' fold-out booklet.
Condition The sleeve is a thick card gatefold & internally pasted. The large hype/tracklist sticker in firmly intact. As is often the case with US sleeves, there is some paper scuffing around the edges, but nothing distracting. All text is clearly legible including along the spine & the panels clean & unblemished with no writing. The booklet is near mint. The catalogue inners are clean & undamaged with just some mild edge wear or faint scuffing in keeping with the condition of the sleeve. A very good example indeed & COMPLETE.
Both vinyl discs are clean & play through fantastic & without fault. The first disc has a number of faint paper scuffs, hairlines & the occasional light scratch but nothing that upsets play & with no major deterioration in sound quality. The playback quality is simply awesome, providing a sound stage that can only be heard on a vinyl original of this classic LP. We would grade the first disc VG/VG+ conservatively. The all important second disc appears in VG+/EX- condition, achieving a higher grade with fewer cosmetic blemishes, none of which intrude on play. All in all, a nice find a rare chance to own a genuine piece of Stones history!
