Condition :-
First of all, records like these do not show up on our desks every day - this is surely "record porn"(!) Obtained from a private collection in the States, this one previous owner copy has survived over half a century. It has crossed the pond & has reached us safe & sound to tell an incredible story. Just like its raw & rugged tales in the music, this record has LIVED.
The US sleeve is a classic heay duty affair of the fifties, with a beautiful front pasted slick. Its colours are rich & vivid & there is nothing that upsets the majesty of the print. The story in the album notes is a joy to read itself - they just don't write them like this anymore! All text on the back panel is unfaded & clearly legible. Due to the cover's vintage & US manufacture, there are a few issues to address around the edges, but nothing that isn't commensurate with age, namely, two thin 3" hairline splits creeping in from the edges at the bottom. Par for the course, the cover remains fully intact. Although it invites a neat tape repair in said area, we have left it 'as is'. The condition easily meets the Very Good grade. It really doesn't get much better!
The information in the run-off grooves is machine stamped & reads: HLP 1012-A HLP 1012-B
The vinyl is heavyweight with a slight raised edge just before the run-in. The disc has been professionally cleaned & play tested. The sound quality is simply glorious. They say Hopkins belongs on the Mount Rushmore of great blues artists & we could hear why. This is the real deal Blues through & through; the lived-in voice, the effortless flicks of the guitar strings, the ambience of the room, that amp sound... wonderful. There is no distortion whatsoever & any surface noise between tracks was kept to an absolute bare minimum. Visually, there is a little mild spindle wear by the centre hole & a number of faint hairline paper scuffs which do not affect play. There is a tiny hiccup blemish [too small to measure] in the wax itself during track two on either side. This was caused at the pressing plant & is all par for the course when it comes to fifties US vinyl. A mere handful of light toe-tapping clicks occur as a result, but nothing more & nothing at all distracting. Once again, the condition meets the Very Good grade & we could not ask for much better.
This is primal, earthy Electric Blues at its best. Historic, vital... highly recommended.
