The Sleeve
Obtained from a one previous owner collection, with all records bought from new at the time, the heavyweight pasted laminate sleeve is in beautiful shape. Clean, with rich, vivid colours & all text clearly legible, there is just chipping to the laminate at the top seam, although it barely affects the front or back panels. There is moderate foxing to the unlaminated reverse and the original price has been pencilled on. The sleeve is simply stunning, & complete with the correct [seam split] period company catalogue inner. It also retains a nice, period UK tax code sticker & even the Mecolico royalty sticker for author's rights, which were affixed during export from the US. Very, very nice indeed!
The Labels
This beautiful first issue copy was pressed just after "Blue Note Records" became an incorporated company & a registered trademark, hence the inclusion of 'INC' & 'R' lettering on the labels.
These are the original 'Deep Groove' versions of the West 63rd Address label, twice as rare as the regular version, which is hard enough to find anyway! Both sides are clean & free from writing, stickers, excessive wear or any other blemishes that would affect the print. There is just a little light spindle wear to indicate play but nothing of any real consequence.
The Vinyl
The Rudy Van Gelder initials 'RVG' & the 'ear' logo are stamped and etched into the runoff area. The matrices, like the 'ear' are hand scratched. A combination of Van Gelder's sound engineering & Plastylite pressing is well & truly the 'golden age' of highest quality, Blue Note pressings. We really should be putting these in our audiophile store!
The vinyl has been professionally cleaned on a Matrix machine and has come up looking sparkling. Under a bright light, there are just a few faint paper scuffs to indicate some play & enjoyment in the past. Upon play testing both sides, we can confirm this one truly does sound remarkable. There is just the lightest surface ambience in places but this is so minor & of no real consequence. If we had to grade this marvellous copy then a conservative EX- would be it, but it plays & looks so much better than that. We give this our highest recommendation.
We are pleased to offer this beautiful, clean, archive copy for sale. An alltime classic 'soul jazz' release.
