David Bowie Aladdin Sane Commemorative Tour Plaque UK memorabilia
Tracklisting / Additional Info: The eight-week tour of the UK begins at the massive Earls Court Arena, attended by 18,000 fans. This is to be the first use of this venue for a rock concert and the biggest ever in-door rock audience in the UK at the time. Unfortunately the show is marred by poor sound, poor stage visibility (it was very low) and adverse fan behaviour (some drunken members of the audience danced naked and urinated in the aisles and there were outbreaks of violence causing Bowie to ask for calm at one stage). A second show at this venue scheduled for 30 June 1973 is cancelled as a result. Apart from Earls Court, the tour is an enormous success playing 37 towns and cities in 45 days and being sold out in each. Altogether 150,000 fans would attend these concerts. The tour ended with the infamous 'Retirement Gig' at Hammersmith Odeon in London.

Bowie performed what was basically the same set night after night with songs from Aladdin Sane and Ziggy making up most of the set. He also reached back into his early songbook for some numbers and used them as medleys. A typical concert at the start of the tour had the following sequence of songs:
Hang Onto Yourself / Ziggy Stardust / Watch That Man / medley: Quicksand/Life on Mars/Memory of a Free Festival/ The Prettiest Star / Moonage Daydream / Changes / Space Oddity / The Jean Genie / Time / The Width of A Circle / Lets Spend The Night Together / Drive In Saturday / Panic in Detroit / Suffragette City / Cracked Actor / Rock n Roll Suicide.

A typical concert at the end of the tour had the following sequence of songs: Hang Onto Yourself / Ziggy Stardust / Watch That Man / medley: The Wild-Eyed Boy from Freecloud/All the Young Dudes/Oh! You Pretty Things / Moonage Daydream / Changes / Space Oddity / The Jean Genie / Time / The Width of A Circle / Lets Spend The Night Together / Suffragette City / White Light White Heat/ Round & Round / Rock n Roll Suicide.

Backstage on the opening night of the tour, Mick Rock filmed and directed David Bowie's fourth promotional video LIFE ON MARS? (3:55 minutes) backstage at Earls Court on the 12th May 1973 to accompany the singles release on 22nd June 1973.

The tour began and ended in London. The primary reason for the tour was to promote the already successful Aladdin Sane album. An album that had advance orders of 150,000 which was the biggest advance sale in the UK since The Beatles and also became Bowie's first #1 album. As mentioned the setlist drew heavily from this album and it's predecessor Ziggy Stardust, as Bowie saw Aladdin Sane as an extention of Ziggy and once commented that the Aladdin was 'Ziggy Goes To America'

Mel Bush in association with RCA and Mainman promoted the tour. Mel became one of the industries most repected concert promoters during the 1970's and 80's, later in 1973 he would go on to promote Queen's first UK tour in support of Mott the Hoople, before promoting their first headlining tour in 1974, later promoting such stars as Slade, Wings and the legenday Led Zeppelin Earls Court shows.

With each of these acts, once a successful tour was over, Mel would commission a commemorative plaque or mirror as a souvenir of the event. Usually these would be presented to the artist, with only a handful produced and one kept in his own personal archive.

This metal plaque measures 13" x 12" in size, and features a black printed replica of Brian Duffy's eye catching photo from the Aladdin Sane album sleeve. The promoters details are above the picture and the artist name, venue and date details are below.
