Background :-
At age 18, when simply Mark Feld, struggling actor/model/musician Marc went to France for a short period of time (accounts differ). According to Marc's accounts he met a magician who lived in a 40 room mansion with libraries of books on mythology and black magic - According to one of Marc's early producers, Simon Napier-Bell, however, Marc had merely met a guy who did magic tricks and spent a weekend with him. Take your pick !
Whatever the real truth, the experience had a profound effect on Marc. He left France with a much more highly developed imagination and a near obsession with Greek mythology, British romantic poetry & the Tolkien books.
Marc returned to Britain more determined than ever to become a star. He locked himself away for months writing songs & attributed it to the work of his Guardian Angel whom, he was sure, really did all of the writing. During this period of time, Marc would churn out a huge store of songs which he would still be dipping into five albums later. Among them was a song which he entitled "The Wizard" in honor of his wizardly friend in France. With the help of producer Jim Economedies, he recorded the song and landed a record contract with Decca.
This was a symbolic moment in more ways than one - It was also the moment that the change happened from Mark Feld (AKA Toby Tyler the folk singer) into Marc Bolan. For once, not Marc's idea !
When Marc received the initial samples of "The Wizard" from Decca he was shocked to find that his name had been changed without his approval. Decca had decided that the name Marc Feld would not do & for some reason had changed Marc's last name to "Bowland". The name change didn't bother Marc as much as did the fact that he had not been consulted about the matter. As would become typical of other events in his future, Marc refused to allow Decca to have it their way without his stamp of approval. After negotiations, he convinced them to drop the W and the D from "Bowland" & shorten the name to just "BOLAN". Thus Mark Feld became Marc Bolan and in November of 1965 "The Wizard" was released and the voice and music of Marc Bolan was broadcast for the first time over British airwaves.
Condition :-
The labels are open logo Decca blue 'A' labels with 'Demonstration Sample' text & strobe edging, printed in silver. They show minimal wear & are clean & bright, free from any writing.
The original four prong push-out centre is still intact.
The vinyl has obviously been played, with several visible light surface scuffs, but these are primarily cosmetic. It is free from any significant flaws and plays without fault with no skips, clicks or jumps. Visually the vinyl looks VG+, but actually plays a wonderful EX with the minimum of background noise - quite astonishing for a forty year old copy of this record & certainly the best condition copy we have ever seen.
The matrices are : Side One - DRF-36707-T1-1C Side Two - DRF-36708-T1-1C
All in all a fantastic copy of this Crown Jewel of Bolan collectables that you'll be unlikely to ever find in better condition - Get it while you can!
