Background
Keane started their music life in East Sussex, England in the latter part of the 1990's, with college pals Tom Chaplin (vocals), Richard Hughes (drums), Tim Rice-Oxley (piano) and Dominic Scott (guitars). They initially played covers of rock classics by bands from the Beatles to U2 to Oasis all over Sussex and the surrounding area. The band quickly realised that this well worn route was not where their aspirations were and they started composing their own songs Realising that London was the place to be to crack the industry they left college and moved to London in 1999. They self released their first single, Call Me What You Like in 2000 which sold diddly squat as was the case with this their second single..
By mid-2001, it was clear that Keane was, at best, getting off to a slow start. The labels had yet to come calling, dismissing the band as Coldplay clones, and getting by on club shows and a handful of singles was hardly the fast track to success. Dominic Scott made his exit from the band around this time. The East Sussex pals persevered, however, and finally caught a break in late 2002 when they were noticed by Simon Williams of indie label Fierce Panda. Williams was in attendance at a Keane show and offered the band a small recording contract on the spot. 2003 saw the release of the single Everybody's Changing. The title was indicative of the band's fortunes, as the A-side became a monster success throughout the UK. Not long after its release, Keane had practically every label in the country knocking at their door.
The band decided to sign with Island UK, and fall of that year saw the release of their fourth single This Is The Last Time (as well as a re-release of Everybody's Changing). Fans were salivating for new Keane material by this time. The band had arrived.
