MORE BACKGROUND INFORMATION TO THIS RELEASE
In a final farewell to fans, and a middle finger to the label that lost interest and wouldn't give them the support they deserved (even after a study indicated that pumpkins fans were the most loyal of any artist signed to the label), the Smashing Pumpkins literally gave away their final work, 'Machina II/the Friends & Enemies of Modern Music', on Wednesday via FedEx: a double LP with three 10" EPs on hand-cut, hand-numbered, non-lacquered acetate. The new material consists of alternate mixes and studio outtakes from the last few years. Total number of songs: 25. Total number of copies: 25.
Some of the recipients, heavily active in the online fan community, were instructed to circulate the new material as quickly as possible, as the band plan on playing some of it on their European tour, which starts next weekend... So, late that night, scans of the artwork went up online, followed by a full set of mp3s.
All tracks are completely new/unheard, or new alternate versions of previously existing songs, except for Real Love, which appeared on the Friends & Enemies" 60m cassette>bootleg, and Le Deux Machina, which is the same synth version as found on the acoustic machina demos. The other songs which appear (i.e. Atom Bomb, Saturnine) are alternate versions which differ from otherwise released B-sides, etc. "Real Love" can now also be found on Rotten Apples and "Slow Dawn" and "Lucky 13" appear on Judas O which is bundled with Rotten Apples. Those three tracks are the only from Machina II which were released by the band on CD.
Q101 is the station that Bill Corgan has on occasion used for exclusives such as for example the first airing of Untitled which he then gave three copies on CDR as a competion prize.
This copy of the Double CDR was obtained initially by a fan who entered a competition on Q101.
