EMERSON LAKE & PALMER Works Volume 1 (1977 UK first issue 14-track double vinyl LP. Works Volume 1 stands as one of the most ambitious and divisive albums in the Emerson, Lake & Palmer catalogue. Conceived as a lavish double-LP, the album gaveeach memberof the band an entire side to showcase their individual musical identities, before uniting for a full-band finale on the fourth side. Keith Emerson opens proceedings with a bold, classically-leaning suite, highlighted by Piano Concerto No. 1, a fully orchestrated work that underlines his lifelong devotion to modern classical composition and grand-scale arrangements. Greg Lake’s contribution offers a more melodic and accessible counterbalance, featuring reflective ballads such as C’est La Vie and Closer To Believing, blending pastoral acoustics with his unmistakable vocal warmth. Carl Palmer’s side is rhythmically adventurous and technically dazzling, fusing rock, jazz and orchestral percussion into a showcase of precision and power. The fourth side reunites the trio in full symphonic-rock mode, with Fanfare For The Common Man emerging as the album’s most enduring highlight—a thunderous, synthesiser-driven reworking of the Aaron Copland classic that became one of ELP’s biggest commercial successes. Tracks such as Pirates further reaffirm the band’s cinematic flair and sense of scale. Works Volume 1 captures ELP at their most expansive and uncompromising, reflecting both the creative freedom and excess of the late-’70s progressive rock era. Love it or loathe it, this is a fascinating, large-scale statement from a band determined to push rock music beyond conventional boundaries. The embossed tri-fold picture sleeve has lyrics & band portraits printed across the inside and shows scuffing and ringwear, whilst the vinyl remains in Excellent condition with few signs of play K80009). |
