Britpop. Another of those typically English one-off genres that still resonates as a definition today.
Britpop arose in the mid to late 90's in the UK as a new wave of political, cultural and artistic feeling spread
through society. Musically the style is solidly indie-guitar-rock, following in the traditions of early indie acts
like The Smiths and Joy Division or the 'Madchester' baggy stylings of The Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses.
What defines any genre though is it's classics; albums and singles, or events, from a certain select number of bands.
The Britpop years had as many classics as you could imagine. It saw the arrival of Oasis with their genius debut album
'Definitely Maybe', other survivors like The Charlatans or Pulp reached new peaks during this time too. And of course
you have to have one-hit-wonders, the kind of bands who were stars just for those short few years; for every Oasis,
Blur and Suede Britpop also offered us Octopus, Bis and Smaller!
Below are listed many of the acts who defined the Britpop era, some have survived to become genuinely great bands,
others have disappeared from any scene! It remains a very strong collectors market, here you'll find top
rarities, imports + collectables.
