Alternative or Indie music is the term most used to describe bands and artists who don't
'fit' into pop's mainstream music. The term was probably first used to describe the
post-punk acts of the late 70s and early 80s and since then has included alt-country,
riot-grrl pop, lo-fi, Brit-pop and more.
With most of the most inventive and imaginative music of the 1980s and 90s originating from
the alternative underground many groups were signed to major record labels. This welcomed
alternative sounds to a wider mainstream, which has led to some more sanitizing of acts and
pop taking on many of these newer styles.
But the alternative underground of music is still where new ideas and changes begin. So
whether it is grunge, industrial rock, Mad-chester indie dance, rap-metal, C-86, emo,
pop-punk or garage rock's revival the indie underground will have been the breeding ground.
