supersol Sheffield, S Yorks UNITED KINGDOM Created Wed 1st Aug '12 09:38 (GMT)I've ceased to see where I'm going... As ever, I first got this new as a "palm tree" label Island stereo LP, and now have the expanded CD and the deluxe double CD "Collector's" version. Also as ever, I have always wanted to find a pink label copy of the LP, so when this MONO copy came up, I could not resist. Just as vinyl sounds sometimes better than digital, just so sometimes mono sounds better than stereo, the prime examples being the first 4 Beatles albums. I have yet to play this gem, but will do so in about two weeks time, when I get a short break from the daily grind. Want more? Fill your boots at listentomusicanywhere.com[reply to this topic ]

supersol Sheffield, S Yorks UNITED KINGDOM Created Tue 31st Jul '12 09:21 (GMT)Jethro Tull "Stand Up" with pink "eye" Island label As usual, I already have this album in various guises, and it is certainly one of my top ten favourite LPs of all time. I first bought it on vinyl with the "palm tree" label, and now have the expanded CD and deluxe multi-disc repackage also. I have always slightly regretted having this one on a label that wasn't pink, so when this gem came up I was anxious to get it. The inner sleeve is wrong, however, so I'll swap it for the one in my original LP. If by chance you have never heard this, you are missing a real treat. It is a sheer joy to listen to, from beginning to end, and, incidentally, the most eclectic thing they ever did. Igor kolpakov Khabarovsk, Russian federation RUSSIA Created Mon 11th Aug '08 05:31 (GMT)The syncresis of traditions and four basic styles through th Respecting this great group it would be better to choose this topic as first but not second. Lot of interested people and simply music lovers may be knowing all difficult history of the band and changes within it. But not many people educating themselves in rock-music could try to give exact definition and appreciation to all what's called the style of Jethro Tull as primary. Many people around the world still didn't understand the theatre of Ian Anderson calling it "the circus show". Let's analyze what it is meaning the primary style. The admirable things begin to fall down before us when we start listening first two alboms (1968,1969). As we listen already having knowledge in their autobiography,we notice the whole mosaic of stylistic elements and ethnic primary traditions based on english poetics and wonderful humour. Yes,those four teen-agers were so wise,as if they were already old men (they scenically wanted to seem to be older). Passing through the first steps to becoming the famous group they did not even suspect, expect or sometimes realize how many traditions influenced them. No time to think,so much to work. But now,in our century,if to listen their discography and follow their evolution,we can define in first two alboms typologically four and somewhere five basic styles united and integrated as one polystylistic foundation:rhythm and blues, barocco, progressive jazz and Jimmy Hendrix' influence based on english ballad and it's together with wonderful poetics,as I told. All in all already provocates to think of style as the free will allows on emotional level. This is perfectly false to trust only to emotions. Reasonably,as a fact,it is the base of their exclusive polystyle. In addition let's imagine. If the blues"cuckoo" for flute (Ian Anderson,1968,first albom) consists, for example,of rhythm and blues with barocco elements in harmony,"A new day yesterday" has Jimmy Hendrix' and Eric Clapton's influence (solo of guitar improvised) and represents more hard sort of their style like "Back door engel",later in 1974 which is full of contrasting types of elements described above, the songs like "Fat man" (1969,"Stand Up" albom) consist rhythmically of indian primary tradition, all the rest is no more than north-Sudan traditions but poetics is perfectly british with elements of admirable humour.Such songs led directly to 1974 (albom-suite of songs "War child",for example, the song"Bungle in the jungle"). There the african and european musical traditions are ...[reply to this topic ]
Igor kolpakov Khabarovsk, Russian federation RUSSIA Created Sun 10th Aug '08 04:07 (GMT)The questions of style definition after analysis of creation Jethro Tull remains the greatest group in all respects,it's obvious. I analysed its alboms about 24 years and didn't stop surprising and admiring. Never the less in Russia especially they still don't stop repeating always hurrying to give to this group one-sided meaning like group in blues-rock;others say it's soul +hard +folk group. But third part names it as progressive rock. After so much experience studying in russian academy of music in the name of Gnessins (Moscow) my colleege and me researched their alboms. I noticed at once that she paid my attention that since 1971 they made a masterpiece such as "Aqualung"telling me to listen albom again. After that I have come to opinion that it is their first art-rock albom because it was in accordance with all standarts and traditions the first classical scenic suite performed on jazz-rock-instruments (in combo). I talked to my doctor of harmony discussing this problem and we decided to choose to exams two alboms for research and public discussion during examinations: "Thick As A Brick" and "Passion Play". The examinators hardly could discover something extra-ordinary before my examination's answer. There were very many young masters of arts who supported my opinion together with my doctor of harmony but it was a real fight of opinions. It was too hard to prove to the rest department of theory and composition that it was a beginning of new symphonic tradition, new cyclic forms like rock-sonata and rock-poem with epic topics. In fact,it was beginning of art-rock style of group which still has great continuation because the forms and contents are so meaningful and connected in syncretical way. I've got an excelent mark passed third course of harmony being so glad. Now I'm master of arts myself thank's to this group first,in fact and my students are first who gets to know about Jethro Tull and groups like Yes,E.L.P.,Genesis,etc. and Rick Wakemann,Mike Oldfield,Peter Hammill and similar artists that their art-rock style is in fact for centuries and not the same as progressive rock or other combination thought out by free will.Igor Kolpakov.[reply to this topic ]
