 | | Review: Pure poetry, man I've owned this album on CD for years now. The recent acquisition of a quality record deck has awakened my interest in much of the music I grew up with, from the mid-70s to present day.
Songs that I've been living with for over three decades take on a new meaning with this vinyl copy. Timing is better, instruments and voices are better structured in the sound stage, I'm hearing things never revealed on the CD. Drums sound like drums, and not battered slabs of damp cardboard. Acoustic guitars have more bite. And then there's Phoebe's voice, of course. Rising above everything, leading the way with her inimitable lyrics and unique vocal style. May she rest in peace now. Poetry Man will be her most recognised song, but for me it's Never Letting Go. For those unfamiliar, file alongside Laura Nyro, Boz Scaggs and shades of Joni Mitchell.
Sourcing quality albums in good condition from the musically rich 70s era is something of a Holy Grail in today's world of mp3 files and sloppy vinyl repressings. So it was a no-brainer when I happened across this superb compilation listed as Still Sealed. None of the usual, "should I, shouldn't I?" hesitation. Instant purchase. And very happy for that.
