first released in 1970 and is now reissued for National Album
Day. It is the band's final studio album with Lou Reed, and it
was conceived as an accessible record full of songs with radio
potential. The New York group set aside the avant-garde
experiments of their earlier work in favour of polished,
melodic rock. Reed left the band before the album reached
the shops.

The record is built around 'Sweet Jane'
and 'Rock & Roll', which became two of Reed's
best-known songs. Recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York,
the sessions gave a larger role to Doug Yule, who sings lead
on the opener 'Who Loves The Sun'.

Picture sleeve
