Recorded at New York's Power Station in the summer of 1980 with producer Jimmy Iovine, Making Movies marked a genuine expansion of Mark Knopfler's songwriting, with pianist Roy Bittan brought in from Springsteen's E Street Band, and rhythm guitarist David Knopfler departing amid tension during the sessions. Bittan's now-famous piano line on "Romeo and Juliet" is directly borrowed from his own earlier part on Springsteen's "Jungleland." The album reached number one in Italy and Norway, number four in the UK, and was later certified platinum in the US and double platinum in the UK.
