Lou Reed's literary, rhythm-and-blues-rooted songwriting met Welsh multi-instrumentalist John Cale's appetite for minimalism and distortion, joined by guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker, whose unconventional standing drum style became one of the band's defining sonic traits. Andy Warhol's involvement as manager, and his introduction of Nico into the group, led directly to their landmark debut The Velvet Underground & Nico, represented here by "I'm Waiting For The Man," "Venus In Furs," "Heroin" and "All Tomorrow's Parties." The follow-up, White Light/White Heat, pushed further into raw, chaotic territory, a record Cale himself described as "consciously anti-beauty," before Cale's departure prompted a shift toward the more melodic, introspective songwriting that would go on to define much of Reed's career.
