MASTODON Crack The Skye (15th Anniversary Deluxe Edition 2-CD + Blu-ray package, book-bound packaging - Released in 2009, Crack the Skye completed Mastodon's elemental tetralogy, following Remission (earth), Leviathan (water) and Blood Mountain (fire) with an album representing aether, spirit and the space beyond the physical world. Its narrative, centred on a paraplegic protagonist's astral travel through Tsarist Russia and the assassination of Rasputin, doubles as a deeply personal tribute: drummer Brann Dailor, the album's primary lyricist, wrote the record in the aftermath of his younger sister Skye's death by suicide at fourteen, telling MTV that "there's no better way to pay tribute to a lost loved one than having an opportunity to be in a group with my friends and we make art together." Guest vocalist Scott Kelly, who appears on the title track, has described corresponding with Dailor's father and studying a photograph of Skye before recording his part, calling it one of the heaviest sessions of his career. Produced by Brendan O'Brien and recorded primarily at Southern Tracks Studios in Atlanta, the album debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200 and has sold over 200,000 copies in the US, making it one of the band's best-selling releases and widely regarded as their most progressive and experimental work to date. This 15th Anniversary Deluxe Edition presents the original album remastered on CD1, paired with The Score, a fully instrumental version of the album, on CD2. The accompanying Blu-ray runs to almost three hours of material, including new anniversary animations, the Crack the Skye feature film, and The Making of Crack the Skye documentary. The set is presented in book-bound packaging with a 26-page booklet, new artwork by longtime Mastodon artist Paul Romano, and a stamp sheet. Factory sealed).
