The album itself is a conceptual adaption of Biblical passages from John 13-18, and is extremely experimental in both its lyrical content and composition. The band used the help of an outside writer, Costa's Ferris, to create this monumental record. While combining psychedelic and prog rock, the album also incorporates ethnic instruments, choral chanting, and spoken word recitiations. Including a guest appearance on 'Infinity' from Greek Actress Irene Papas.
Vangelis himself as stated that the album was apparently created under the influence of Sahlep, a Turkish flour which is consumed in beverages or deserts. This, coupled with the album bearing the 'Number Of The Beast' as the album title, was misinterpreted by fundamentalist Christians as perhaps a drug, a demon, or even a black magic sect, not infact a Turkish delicacy.
The UK-printed sleeve has just light wear with a little sun bleaching at the spine and moderate rubbing to the bottom corners at the opening edge and no tears, splits or writing. Also included are the two original 'Plastic bags can be dangerous' poly-lined inners that are date stamped '10/72', confirming they are the inners from the time of purchase.
The vinyl shows light axial wear with a few scuffs; the labels show moderate spindle wear, though nothing severe leaving this a nice Excellent example.
This record is increasingly hard to find now, in any condition and this copy is certainly one of the better ones on the market at the moment!
