The original Ska sound was a late 50's Jamaican interpretation of the US R&B sound they were hearing at the time. Ska's rhythms and melody developed into a totally distinctive sound, turning slowly into the more common 'reggae' sound.
Ska Revival however is late 70's UK creation. In the midst of the prevalent white, angry face of punk a number of young UK bands were making bold political and social statements with a sound reviving ska's individual rhythm. With culturally relevant lyrics, racially integrated line-ups and a strong independent spirit ska revival was possibly even more revolutionary than punk at the time. Major players in the revival were The Specials, whose own independent label '2 Tone Records' would release the definitive singles and albums of the era.
Rarely that commercially successful the sound has however attained a level of sustained cult appeal. Subsequent generations of younger UK and US bands have continually been influenced by both the sound and the style of the time. This is especially true in the USA where a punkier version of ska is one of the countries most popular alternative sounds.
