RUNT Runt Live: The Necessary Cosmic Frenzy (Long-lost 1971 concert from Todd Rundgren's Runt presented here as a 1-CD digipack edition - Captured live at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studios on 30 June 1971 and originally broadcas t over WMMR, Runt Live: The Necessary Cosmic Frenzy documents the first ever solo Todd Rundgren performance to be recorded live. Issued under the Runt band name, this release catches Rundgren at an early turning point, moving beyond the studio-crafted sound of his first records and into a looser, more immediate live setting. Backed by a tight band featuring future Utopia keyboardist Mark "Moogy" Klingman, bassist Stu Woods, guitarist Tom Cosgrove and drummer Norman "N.D." Smart, the set runs through material with a raw, intimate energy that suits the session's live-in-studio atmosphere. Alongside originals including "Lady On The Terrace", "Before I Grow Too Old" and "Tonight I Want To Love Me A Stranger," the collection also includes "Hold Me Tight" as an excerpt from the Beatles song, plus an alternate mix of "Lady On The Terrace." This release offers a valuable snapshot of Rundgren's early solo period, with the immediacy of a radio broadcast performance and a line-up that points toward the next phase of his work.
