OLIVER COATES The History Of Sound (2026 UK/EU
27-track LP pressed on Black Vinyl)
The
original motion picture soundtrack to the sweeping historical
romantic drama from director Oliver Hermanus, starring Paul
Mescal and Josh O'Connor. The film, based on the short story
by Ben Shattuck, has been described as "a cinematic romance
for the ages" (ThePlaylist). London-based cellist, composer
and producer Oliver Coates brings together folk, orchestral,
chamber and choralmusic with synthesized and sampled
sound, the film's music tracking the emotional landscape of
the story. The romance is told through folk song, recorded
where it lives, in peoples' homes, front porches and places of
worship.
The vocal takes were chosen for spontaneity
and raw quality rather than technical perfection, and an
upright piano with a pencil stuck inside was preferred to a
perfectly conditioned piano. Features contributions from Sam
Amidon, Aedin Moloney, Briana Middleton, Sophie Hearn and
Peter Mark Kendall, with Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor
performing folk songs including "Silver Dagger", "Country
Life" and "Across The Rocky Mountain". Released by Abbey
Road Recordings.
