THE YOUNG LIONS The Young Lions (Original Jazz Classics 2026 limited edition 5-track stereo LP pressed on 180-gram Black Vinyl. Recorded for union scale in a single day at Bell Sound Studios, The Young Lions brought together a group of largely unknown players who'd all soon become giants: Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Frank Strozier, Bobby Timmons and Bob Cranshaw, with Wayne Shorter contributing four of the five compositions. Cannonball Adderley wrote the liner notes, opening with a line that's lost none of its bite: "We are living in the era of the glorification of mediocrity." His argument, borrowed from the title of Irwin Shaw's novel, was that jazz was being pulled apart between rigid tradition and empty avant-gardism, and that true genius sat somewhere neither camp wanted to claim. This edition is part of the Original Jazz Classics series, all-analogue mastered from the original tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI, and housed in a Stoughton Tip-On Jacket picture cover with spinewrap series obi, factory sealed.
