Recorded in 1973 at Royal Recording Studios in Memphis,Tennessee, Call Me finds Al Green at the height of his commercial and artistic powers - produced by Willie Mitchell and drawing on the full resources of the Hi Records house band, the Memphis Strings and a brass section featuring AndrewLove, Jack Hale and Wayne Jackson. The album balances Green's gloriously sentimental pop instincts against the earthier currents of Memphis soul, with his subtly controlled falsetto as the constant thread. The sinuous title single sits alongside a programme that moves from the sharp-edged groove of 'Stand Up' through Green's unsettling gift for finding comfort in loneliness on Hank Williams' 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry', to the spiritual depth of 'Jesus Is Waiting'.
