Africa/Brass was John Coltrane's debut for Impulse! Records, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and produced by Bob Thiele. Originally recorded in 1961, the album expands Coltrane's working quartet with a large ensemble, bringing the line-up to 21 musicians and giving the session its distinctive brass-led scale. Arrangements by Eric Dolphy and McCoy Tyner place Coltrane within a larger orchestral framework, with French horns and euphonium helping to create a sound that moved beyond the hard bop language most closely associated with him at the time.
