presenting the album in its original <B>mono</B>
configuration, mastered all-analog by Kevin Gray from the
original master tapes andpressed on 180-gram vinyl at
Optimal. A pivotal architect of modern jazz trombone, J. J.
Johnson translated the vocabulary of bebop into a fluent,
agile brass voice, earning the respect of figures such as Dizzy
Gillespie and Charlie Parker. After appearing on Miles Davis'
first Blue Note session in 1952, Johnson was invited by Alfred
Lion to lead a series of dates that now stand among the
label's defining early-1950s recordings. These sessions
capture an extraordinary run of line-ups: a 1953 sextet
featuring Clifford Brown, Jimmy Heath and John Lewis; a 1954
quintet with Wynton Kelly and Charles Mingus; and a 1955
date alongside Hank Mobley, Horace Silver and Paul
Chambers, with Kenny Clarke anchoring each session on
drums. When Blue Note moved from 10" to 12" LP in 1956, the
label consolidated these recordings into expanded 1500
Series editions, including <I>The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson,
Vol. 2.</I> Picture sleeve with hype sticker, factory sealed.
