Emerging from a period of fragmentation, side projects, and shifting creative priorities, the album captures Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala deliberately stepping away from the band's maximalist past and into something leaner, darker, and more electronically charged. Built from material Omar had originally recorded with Deantoni Parks, the songs were shaped into Mars Volta compositions after Cedric identified their potential and began writing lyrics.
